Family Planning is a Human Right themed World Population Day 2018 at Banasthali

World Population Day, which seeks to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues, was established by the then-Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989, an outgrowth of the interest generated by the Day of Five Billion, which was observed on 11 July 1987.

2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the 1968 International Conference on Human Rights, where family planning was, for the first time, globally affirmed to be a human right. The conference’s outcome document, known as the Tehran Proclamation, stated unequivocally: “Parents have a basic human right to determine freely and responsibly the number and spacing of their children.”

Banasthali has a rich tradition of observing days of national and international importance in the most befitting matter on a regular basis. To mark Population Day, on 11 July 2018, Ms Varnika Singh third year Chemical engineering student triggered the proceedings highlighting significance of the day and the nine standards to uphold the human right to family planning namely non discrimination, available, accessible, acceptable, good quality, informed decision making, privacy – confidentiality, participation and accountability.

Ms Srishti Saxena third year Chemical engineering student spoke on how India today can slow the rate of population growth further without using coercive measures and shared the thoughts of Mr Lester Coutinho Deputy Director Family Planning Program, Bill & Melina Gates Foundation as reported in media. Ms Ishika Singhi third year Chemical engineering student dwelt on the issue of falling fertility and ageing populations in developed states of South India leading to huge employment gaps which is likely to be filled by migrants from less developed states of North India.

Ms Neeharika Agrawal third year Chemical engineering student put forward her views on how the states of India which controlled population growth are loosing on revenue sharing between the centre and state. There was a thunderous round of applause when she quoted Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu who is lately advocating people of his state to have more kids.

Ms Vaishalee Bhrigu from Home Science department who teaches the subject Parenthood and Family Relations also shared thought provoking thoughts on the issue of population control and family planning. Prof BR Natarajan from Chemical Engineering department anchored the proceedings.
