Worldwide BITS Pilani Alumni Mourn Sad Demise of Prof K Gopalan

Prof K Gopalan comes in for a heart-felt recognition, unstinting praise and accolades by all his students from BITS Pilani. Prof Gopalan graduated in Civil Engineering from Bangalore University in 1951. After a stint of 5 years with Tamilnadu government, he joined Birla Engineering College Pilani in 1956 as Lecturer in the Civil Engineering Department. A gifted teacher, he taught the then most sought-for Civil Engineering courses. In 1961, he became Assistant Professor and also Training and Placement officer.

He went to MIT Boston in 1967 to have hands-on knowledge about the admissions procedure at MIT. In 1968, he became Chief of Admissions and Placement at BITS.

He single-handedly headed both Admissions & Placement cells. He streamlined the admissions process including computerization. His efforts at placement brought companies in large numbers for campus recruitment. His warm relations with these companies helped BITS to establish a number of new Practice School stations .

He retired from BITS in 1993 and moved to Bangalore with his appointment as Visiting Professor to coordinate the Off Campus programs at the Bangalore hub of BITS and continued in that role till 2000.

Prof. Gopalan after a brief illness breathed his last on 25 Jun 2018. He was undoubtedly the most respected, admired and loved admissions and placement officer BITS Piano ever had. Alumni of BITS Piano across all latitudes and longitudes share the sorrow with his family wife & daughters Sujata Anita Rita and pray that his soul rests in everlasting peace.
