Markus Winter presents the works of Alter Carnol and Andreas Korte in Berlin
Markus Winter is proud to present the works of Alter Carnol and Andreas Korte. The two artists analyze the notion of space perception, asking basic questions about its limits and margins, examinig art’s boundaries and surpassing them at the same time.Since the 1960s, critics emphasized the dematerialisation of the object of art: the material became ephemeral, transient, of secondary importance. Contrary to this attidute denying the physical constitution of the work of art, the volume, material and geometry play a crucial role in Alter Carnol’s oeuvre. At Markus Winter the artist will present his recent pieces from the Abrasion (Abrieb) cycle. Carnol leaves marks on the gallery walls using heavy aluminium cones, cubes and cylinders. He forces the beholder to experience and discover the space around him, depriving the white - cube from its neutral denotation. It could be said in the words of Jacques Derrida that the gesture of the artist leaves a trace. The marking of space through a sign exposes its inner contradictions and materiality that modernism tried to conceal and deny.
Andreas Korte works in various media but the starting point for all his realisations is again the notion of space: be it the gallery directly or the surface of the canvas. Korte uses the media marginalised by the art discourse (3-D computer animation and architectural models), introducing them into the zone usually occupied by the so-called high art. The artist investigates the properties of the white- cube, allowing the viewers to explore the space within which they walk about, from a different, normally inaccessible perspective. Korte’s paintings are a kind of hybrid combining two- and three- dimensional structural qualities. The colorful, sudden cuts reveal a hidden surface behind the layers of paint, denying the features characteristic to this particular medium.

16.05.- 27.06.2009
Opening: 15.05.2009, 6 pm
Located in former East Berlin, Germany, Galerie of Markus Winter was founded in October 2005.
The gallery focuses on international contemporary painting, sculpture, photography and video art with a keen interest in conceptualism and progressive media. Therefore, the exhibition space is designed to accommodate each artist’s project without compromise (allowing for the flexible alteration of the overall architectural structure), and hence provides each artist with a highly individual forum. The yearly gallery program consists of eight to ten exhibitions, including solo exhibitions, as well as curated group shows.
Since our first exhibition, which featured an installation by the acclaimed German video artist Marion Schebesta, we have supported progressive young and mid-career artists from Europe, Asia, and the United States, working in all media. These include: François Boué, Jean-Baptiste Bouvier, Jim Lee, Bryan Osburn and Matthew Abbott.
In addition, we represent members of the Düsseldorf-based artist collective "Konsortium", such as Lars Breuer, Julio Ernesto Herrera Flores.

Jim Lee - easy is hard
Everyday life objects that are familiar to the viewer compose Jim Lee’s sculptures, paintings and installations. As they give off the aura of “the found”, they inspire connotations linked to Arte Povera. Their basic structure is preserved, but is getting recomposed in a certain manner. Those workings could be reduced to fundamental terms as Colour, Form, Line and Shape but this statement would not cope with the sublime play of…

Group show ‘Local Paintings’ at Markus Winter in Berlin
‘Local Paintings’ is questioning the concept of the ‘international style’ in modernist art. Apart from being often associated with an individual relationship to the artwork or the focus on personal expression, the title evokes a connection between the painting and the world outside the gallery/studio walls, a relationship repressed by modernist art theory.
The show confronts the work of four painters, of different nationalities, with different educational, professional and social backgrounds…
