Open source fork CIB seven now available as a real alternative to Camunda 7
(Munich, 03.12.2024) The Munich-based software company CIB, which specializes in process automation, has delivered: Earlier than announced, users of the BPM solution "Camunda 7 Community Edition", which will be discontinued in 2025, can now download a replacement in the form of CIB seven. The open source fork guarantees customers long-term operation, support, maintenance and further development of the open source engine. In this way, the investments made by companies based on Camunda 7 are protected by CIB seven. After the announcement that the free Community Edition (CE) of the BPM engine Camunda will be discontinued as of November 2025, there is unrest and resentment among users. But now there is an alternative: At cibseven.org, interested parties can not only download the open source fork CIB seven, they can also find detailed documentation and installation instructions. With CIB seven, a reliable, free and future-proof alternative to Camunda 7 is now available to the open source community.
The fork is available in two versions: Version 1.0 is intended for testing and can be run immediately without modifying the source code of customer projects. Version 1.1 requires some modification but is already suitable for production use - a migration script is available.
CIB founder Ulrich Brandner: "We are proud to have delivered the fork in such a short time and well ahead of our original schedule - a release in the first quarter of 2025. But after our announcement in September, we received so much positive feedback that we decided to put the CIB seven project on the fast track."
CIB seven protects investments and the digital sovereignty of customers
The user response has been encouraging for several reasons:
• Many users have invested time and money to extend or integrate Camunda 7 to meet their needs. With CIB seven, these investments can be protected - with low migration costs.
• Those who have integrated Camunda 7 as an embedded engine in their own applications face another challenge: Camunda 8 currently does not support this use case. CIB seven also supports this scenario and protects your investment.
• CIB will continue to provide support and maintenance for the CIB seven open source fork after October 2025. This means that users can further use their systems, whether on-premise or in the cloud.
• With the early availability of version 1.0 of CIB seven, CIB takes into account the needs of large organizations in particular when sourcing and implementing new software: Fixed regulations and timeframes must be adhered to with the appropriate lead time, as well as extensive testing. Version 1.0 is well suited for this.
CIB CEO Georg Hatzelmann: "With the fork, we are securing the digital sovereignty of our customers and all organizations that will switch to CIB seven because they trust open source and do not want to become dependent on a single vendor. Our solution also meets the needs of those who want to take their time and keep their options open."
New frontend and marketplace to bring further improvements
CIB seven does more than provide maintenance and support beyond 2025. The fork will also be equipped with new functions in the future. A marketplace for enhancements based on CIB seven is also planned.
Next steps and program versions:
• CIB seven will go live for existing CIB customers in the first quarter of 2025. This includes both on-premise installations and SaaS delivery.
• CIB seven 2.0 will be released in April 2025: This version will include the changes from Camunda CE 7.23 and offer a completely new front-end based on modern technologies, further improving the stability and security of the system. A preview of the new user interface is already available at cibseven.org/ui-preview.
• Marketplace: By July 2025, CIB will provide a marketplace where paid and open source extensions to CIB seven will be offered.
• Another version of CIB seven will be released in October 2025: This one will include the changes from Camunda CE 7.24 as well as a new web-based process modeler.
• As with previous releases, the upcoming versions will offer two variants - a drop-in replacement for testing and a production version with an easy migration path.
CIB seven: a long-term commitment to open source
CIB seven will remain completely open source in the future. At the same time, CIB offers support, individual consulting and development services to interested organizations according to their needs.
CIB seven is also the basis for the low-code process automation platform CIB flow, which makes it easy for administrations and companies to start digitalizing their business processes.
CIB flow comprises more than 200 intelligent standard functions and value-added solutions and significantly extends the basic functions known from Camunda 7. It therefore offers many additional benefits as an efficient BPM solution. However, it is not a prerequisite for using CIB seven.
