Awards for three product designs

Ottobock impressed the 37 experts of the jury at this year's "red dot award: product design 2013" with its sport prosthesis, 1C63 Triton Low Profile prosthetic foot and Patella Pro knee orthosis. Among a total of 4,662 entries, these medical technical devices were selected both for their innovative concept and their high design quality. The award ceremony for the internationally recognised seal of quality will be held in the Aalto Theatre in Essen on 1 July.

Functionality, degree of innovation and symbolic and emotional content are the evaluation criteria for the internationally recognised red dot award. Ottobock proved that the designs made by the Duderstadt family-run business fulfil these criteria to an especially great extent by winning three awards in the life science and medicine category. The new sport prosthesis is a coherent system especially designed for the needs of ambitious amateur athletes. This orthosis is a combination of the new 3S80 Sport knee joint, the 4R204 foot adapter, the Paralympics-tested 1E90 Sprinter carbon-fibre foot and special soles that facilitate running on various surfaces and in various sports.

Trendsetter in medical technology

The anatomical design of the 1C63 Triton Low Profile impressed the jury. Consisting of three carbon-fibre spring components, the prosthetic foot is modelled on a natural foot. Thanks to its innovative design, the interactive system ensures a harmonious transition between the various phases of the gait cycle and can handle all situations. The Triton is extremely sturdy and provides stability and support for everyday use as well as for sports. Ottobock also set standards at the red dot awards with its Patella Pro knee orthosis. It can achieve remarkable therapy results for anterior knee pain . Its dynamic realignment technology supports the patella in all relevant flexion angles, thus allowing the patient to move without pain.

The renowned organisation will pay tribute to Ottobock's well-designed innovations and trendsetting ideas with awards being presented at the traditional red dot gala. Around 1,200 guests from the world of design, business and politics will be at the Aalto Theatre to honour the winners. They include the largest jury thus far in the almost 60 years of red dot awards. The team headed by initiator and CEO Prof. Peter Zec consists of 37 international experts – all independent, qualified designers, university professors and specialised journalists. In an evaluation process lasting several days, they selected the winners in 19 different categories ranging from medicine to construction projects to vehicles, electronics and furniture. The winning designs can be viewed in the red dot design museum in a special exhibition for four weeks after the award ceremony.
