Alumni of BITS Pilani at BITSAA Dublin Chapter Celebrate BITSian Day 2021

Alumni of BITS Pilani at BITSAA Dublin Chapter Celebrate BITSian Day 2021

For the alumni of the institution of eminence Birla Institute of Technology – BITS Pilani spread across various continents, the first Friday of August every year along with the accompanying weekend is BITSian Day celebrations. Each one of them is undoubtedly a dreamer performer and achiever. With Passion Quotient for alma mater peaking, for each one of them, Pilani is just not a destination at which one arrives but rather the spirit with which one undertakes and continues the journey.

Any BITSian day gathering anywhere would indeed be a stellar constellation of Chairmen, Managing Directors, COOs, CEOs, CIOs, Scientists, Presidents and Vice Presidents, Techies, Entrepreneurs, Media Moghuls, Realtors, Professors, Vice Chancellors as well as Consultants. Irrespective of whatever degree they did at Pilani, wherever they came from and whatever their life journey had taken them to, there was one thing common they all shared and that is passion for the alma mater. Each one of them agreed that their stay at Pilani had left an indelible mark on their lives.

It’s with great fan fare, that the handful of BITS alumni showed up this year at Dublin for the annual party that is BITSian Day. They dared to bear the inclement forecasted weather. They ventured out in the open to show up at the flush green grounds of the Deerpark hotel that is surrounded by the Rhododendron gardens, the golf course and the Howth Castle. As has become a staple feature, food with mouth water harvesting dishes was in plenty.

Thanks to sharpened culinary interests of the chief organiser Sanghmitra Kundu Narasimhan (SK), BITS Day has come to be about enjoyment of food, the picturesque scenery and of course unalloyed BITSian style gossip session popularly referred as “laccha”. The camaraderie amongst the BITSians, spanning starting year 1979 thru starting year 2016, and spread in a continuum, is as always lively. This is definitely a happening alumni chapter!

The chapter had its initial inception during a business visit of Venu Palapurthi part of the leadership team of the global BITS Alumni organization. This was in the Spring of 2015. Though there were only few BITSians who were then based out of Dublin, they became closely knit and started meeting at homes for board games, for treks on the cliffs of Ireland and for dinners, all to have a “Gadar ”. That is BITS speak for a party.

This year gathering had a special focus on the book authored by “Terry” Terence Alvares. “Itsy BITS’y Tales Pilani in the 80’s published by Black Eagle Books.. Suresh Narasimhan calls it a collection of campus trivia circa 1984-88 AD. How so many copies of this book reached Dublin is a thriller by itself. They have met every year for BITSian Day (2018 was an exception). Several of the years they have met together more than a few times in the year.

The last two years have come under the spell of the COVID lockdown mode constraints. They have survived every austerity thrown at them and managed to stay within the rules. But meet they must and that they did and that too in style ! The thing that binds them all together is their love for a place called Pilani. They swear that they are all BITS alumni and Proud to be BITSians and keep saying Picture Abhi Baaki Hai Mere Dost:
