Gates and Batista's joint venture in Brazil

One is the chairman of Microsoft. The other is the richest man in Brazil according to Forbes. Together, they’re planning a significant investment in the Para region.

Bill Gates and Eike Batista are creating a joint venture to explore biotechnology in the Amazon with plans to invest around US$300 million in land there. Para is no stranger to investments in this particular sector, having programs in place to help utilize all areas within the biotechnology industry that results in billions of dollars, especially when it comes to pharmaceutical drugs.

The region has proven to be quite popular when it comes to investments in other sectors such as agribusiness, cosmetics, mining and tourism, which receives special benefits from the government. Surprisingly enough, sustainable forestry has proven to be a secret gem as far as Global Forestry Investments (GFI) success goes.

Offering investors a stable haven to put their money with returns of 10 percent, clients have also responded well to the sustainable element included within the investment – helping the Amazon rainforest.

The “eco-friendly” bandwagon has been in motion for a while now and people are increasingly wanting to do their own little part for the environment, however small. Investing in a commodity like teak, which is not only in demand but also has a high market value definitely falls under the ‘alternative’ category when it comes to looking for a place to put your money securely into.

Batista and Gates’ move to acquire land in one of the same regions GFI has established success will likely result in the same outcome for their explorations. Given the immense success both men have had prior to this it’s hard to see how they can fail.

Batista, 54, is the owner of EBX Group with a net worth of $30 bn. Forbes listed Batista as the eighth richest person in the world and the only Brazilian on the list of the 50 most influential people in global finance. Crediting his mother for his self-esteem and discipline, he maintains an active digital life and is expected to invest in other new, cutting edge renewable power technologies.
