Young Environmental leaders showcase sustainable solutions
The 47 applicants from 18 developing countries were picked out of 800 entries, representing their countries at the UNEP-Bayer Young Environmental Envoy Programme, where their ideas ranged from eco-tourism to eco-friendly cooking oil.
Nick Nuttall, the acting director of UNEP’s Division for Communications and Public Information said: “The participants in the UNEP-Bayer Young Environmental Envoy Programme are trailblazers in that they demonstrate the kinds of low carbon, resource efficient Green Economy solutions needed for a fairer, more sustainable and prosperous planet.”
Involved in environmental initiatives in their home countries, this program expands their knowledge by providing interactive workshops and field trips, This enables them to gain expertise, support and confidence in new ideas that will help them implement or expand on current projects ongoing in their home country.
“The energy and creativity embodied by the young envoys and their projects - such as solar-powered phone chargers in Venezuela, or compiling indigenous environmental knowledge and bringing it to young people in Ecuador - should serve as inspiration to their home governments, and others, to take concrete action on sustainable development next year at Rio+20,” he added.
Being media-savvy will also be something that these young leaders are taught to handle. The UNEP will also hold workshops to advise young people on how they can communicate their ideas effectively to journalists, NGOs, governments and potential donors.
Our approach is a sensible one, appreciating the high demand for timber and the fact that the timber trade will continue. Therefore we have an opportunity to participate and make sure that any negative impact to the surrounding environment and community is minimised and that good management secures the future of the forests.
