Prof JVD Murty adds New Dimensions to Teaching German at Banasthali

With his tall stature, booming voice and Nobel laureate Albert Einstein type looks, Prof JVD Murty takes his inspiration from Robert Frost quote “I'm not a Teacher, but an Awakener” and each one of the students whom he has taught at Osmania University for over three decades will vouch for that. He holds an Economics Honours degree from Delhi University and then pursued Masters and PhD in German. He jokingly says that his parents did not want him to play cricket and hence they encouraged him to study German.

Prof Murty however opened his German teaching innings began at the highly reputed English and Foreign Language University, Hyderabad. Later on he moved over to one among the oldest universities in India today Osmania University, Hyderabad and also served there as Head of the German Department for several years. He is a passion packed bird watcher and there has been never a dull moment in his life. His other passions include travelling, sketching, and playing the Harmonica and the Casio.

Banasthali offers round the year to all students several foreign languages which include German and French at certificate, diploma as well as advanced diploma level. German all along has been a popular choice by thousands of students for the past several years. Prof Hamsavahini Singh who had done a world tour in 1999 on bicycle has been steering the German language teaching at Banasthali for the past three decades and regularly invites experts both from India and abroad to address the German leaning students.

Prof JVD Murty conducted a two day session during 18 – 19 Aug 2019 at Banasthali at the elegant auditorium of SBI School of Commerce and Banking. After Prof Hamsavahini Singh introduced Prof JVD Murty to the students, to a thunderous round of applause, he began his lecture with the famous quote of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe “Those who know nothing of foreign languages know nothing of their own”. With a crisp presentation Prof JVD Murty familiarized all the students about history and geography of Germany as well as the culture, lifestyle, famous personalities, dress, festivals, food and drinks including the specialty of never ending varieties of German Beers.

His play way method of teaching German which has one of the mind-bendingly difficult grammar was refreshing and enjoyed by all students. His interactive way of teaching ensures that there will be never a dull moment during his lecture and no one will see the time in their watches and gadgets every now and then. Prof Murty introduced some of the most famous poets of Germany and encouraged the students to enjoy the rhymes and poems of German. He enthusiastically endorsed the suggestion given by Prof BR Natarajan who has enrolled for the Certificate course in German to translate some of the popular Bollywood songs in German and have fun singing them.

Prof Hamsavahini Singh thanked Prof Murty for visiting Banasthali and presented a bouquet and memento Ms Bharti third year BTech student anchored the proceedings and Senior Research Associate at Banasthali Mr Ankit Burnwal alumnus of BHU proposed vote of thanks. Indeed students who attended the captivating German learning of sessions of Prof JVD Murty left with beaming faces and pride that they were indeed part of an institution which is a shining jewel in the crown among the institutions not only in India today but across the globe.
