Presentation of the iF product design and iF material awards at CeBIT in Hanover

Double gold for Otto Bock at the presentation of the iF product design and iF material awards 2011: the third generation of the Avantgarde active wheelchair series recently received the iF product design award in gold at CeBIT in Hanover. The iF material award in gold was also presented for SKINGUARD® carbon resin, which is used in the fabrication of prosthetic sockets.

The three new models of the Avantgarde 3 feature exemplary ergonomics, a contemporary design and outstanding functionality, scoring points with the jury comprised of international experts. This was also the case with the z10 push and brake assist, which received the
regular iF product design award 2011. Experts evaluated product submissions in 16 categories based on criteria such as design quality, functionality and the choice of materials. More than 1,100 companies from 43 countries attended the competition with a total of 2,756 product entries. Otto Bock had previously received the iF product design award in 2010 for the 1M10 Adjust prosthetic foot and the KIWI rehab buggy for children.

In the contest for the iF material award 2011, the jury selected five gold winners from among 90 entries - including SKINGUARD®, a carbon resin developed by Otto Bock, in combination with the BetaSil silicone insert. In order to offer ultimate quality of life for prosthesis wearers, the properties of stiff and flexible materials were combined in the socket. Using the antimicrobial acrylic lamination resin C-Orthocryl Sanitized protects the skin and prosthetic socket against a broad spectrum of various microorganisms. The dual-component BetaSil silicone insert provides outstanding damping characteristics for the user along with high restoring force and improved control over the prosthesis.
