Talk on Enhanced Oil Recovery at Banasthali by Ms Rose Havilah Pulla UPES Dehradun

In the game of cricket it is said that the match is not over until the last ball is bowled. Similary in oil industry one can say that the well life is not over until the last drop is extracted.

The thermal or compositional transformation of either the hydrocarbons or reservoir rock to aid in the recovery of additional volumes can be defined as Enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The need to deploy EOR primarily arises when a stage is reached in the life cycle of the oil well calling for an external stimulus to displace hydrocarbons trapped in geological formations. Deploying the right type of EOR to hydrocarbon reserves, can greatly improve the production from mature fields, thus increasing the operational life and economic value of such fields.

Ms Pulla Rose Havilah is presently engaged in teaching and active research at UPES Dehradun. She holds a BTech Chemical from Nagarjuna University and Masters in Petrochemical Engineering from Maharaja Sayajirao MS University, Baroda. Her passion for teaching is indeed incredible. On 16 Feb 2019 she visited Banasthali which is World’s largest fully residential women’s university in Rajasthan to give a lecture on Enhanced Oil Recovery for the Chemical Engineering students.

Prof BR Natarajan from Chemical Engineering introduced the distinguished speaker to the audience to a thundering round of applause and Ms Sakshi Bajania President Innovative Chemical Engineers’ ICE Club welcomed her by presenting a colourful bouquet.

Starting from origin of oil and drilling, she deliberated on the primary, secondary and tertiary methods of recovery. Under secondary methods, the details shared included the water flooding and gas flooding. The tertiary methods also known as EOR such as Chemical Flooding, ASP Alkaline Surfactant Polymer, Thermal recovery using steam flooding, miscible displacement using Carbon dioxide injection, Microbial EOR were discussed in detail. The talk was followed by a lively question answer session.

Prof Natarajan proposed vote of thanks and Prof Satish Shukla of Chemical Engineering presented the speaker a glittering Memento on behalf of Banasthali. The students and faculty who attended the lecture by Ms Rose Havilah Pulla left with beaming faces and pride that they were indeed part of an institution which is a jewel in the crown among the women’s universities not only in India today but across the globe.
