Banasthali Breaks into QS Asia University Rankings 2019

Global league table rankings for Universities such as Times Higher Education (THE), Shanghai and QS have become increasingly prominent as a means to judge the performance of universities, and hence as a comparative indicator for prospective students and employers who tend to get carried away by the famous quote “if the University is not in such ranking tables, then the university does not exist.”

Ranking 13,000 universities in Asia from over 40 nations which include nations to reckon with like Japan, China, South Korea, Singapore etc is undoubtedly more competitive than 5 nation BRICS rankings. Banasthali featuring in Quacquarelli Symonds QS Asia Ranking for 2019 in 451 – 500 category is indeed a matter of great pride for Women education and empowerment in India.

It is well known that Banasthali which is a leader among institutions imparting exclusively for women has been in the reckoning by featuring in by QS Rankings 2019 with India Rank 66 – 70 as well as 5 nation Brazil Russia India China South Africa BRICS University rankings 301 – 350 from among 9000 universities.

It has all along been known that India Today magazine year 2008 the Independence Day special for India’s Finest Institutions that make the nation work included Banasthali along with IITs and IIMs. India Today magazine had also ranked Banasthali for 2018 as #2 among Non Government (Private) universities. The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry FICCI established in 1927 had ranked Banasthali as University of the Year in 2015.

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council – NAAC had accredited Banasthali with CGPA of 3.02 on a four point scale and the highest possible “A” grade. In the National Institutional Ranking Framework NIRF – MHRD Govt of India overall ranking of #29, Banasthali had been the only Women’s University to feature among the top 100 universities.

In recent past, Banasthali has been in national and international media attention for getting Diamond status under QS i-Gauge Indian University Rating and the overall Four Star Ranking in Quacquarelli Symonds - QS Stars Rated for Excellence with 5 Stars for each for Teaching, Employability, Facilities, Arts & Culture and Inclusiveness.

Published annually since 2009, the QS Asia University Rankings highlights the top universities in Asia each year. The methodology used to create the ranking is similar to that used for the QS World University Rankings, but with some additional indicators and adapted weightings. This set of criteria, developed in consultation with regional experts and stakeholders, is designed to reflect key priorities for universities in Asia, drawing on as much available data as possible.

The 11 indicators used to compile the QS Asia University Rankings are Academic reputation (30%), Employer reputation (20%), Faculty / student ratio (10%), International research network (10%) , Citations per paper (10%) and papers per faculty (5%), Staff with a PhD (5%), Proportion of international faculty (2.5%) and proportion of international students (2.5%), Proportion of inbound exchange students (2.5%) and proportion of outbound exchange students (2.5%).

In a meeting held at Banasthali on 28 Oct 2018, Prof Aditya Shastri Vice Chancellor shared details of QS Asia University rankings with senior faculty members and gave a clarion call to take up research work as a mission with passion to achieve quantum leap in ranking tables. The faculty members who attended the meeting left with beaming faces and pride that they were indeed part of a top ranking institution which is a jewel in the crown among the women's universities not only in India today but across the globe.
