Faculty Development Centre at Banasthali organized a one week Faculty Development Program on the theme “Interdisciplinary Dimensions of Chemical Engineering” during 21 – 27 July 2018. Chemical Engineering Department Banasthali facilitated the program with Prof BR Natarajan as Coordinator, Prof Satish Shukla as Convenor and Mr Deepak Kumar as Co Convenor.

Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT) is a Scheme launched by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The aim of the scheme which has an outlay of 900 crores during XIIth plan period is to improve the quality of school and higher education by addressing comprehensively all issues related to teachers, teaching, teacher preparation, professional development, Curriculum Design, Designing and Developing Assessment & Evaluation methodology, Research in Pedagogy and developing effective Pedagogy.

Top ranking institutions in India today have been identified under PMMMNMTT as Centre of Excellence in Curriculum and Pedagogy to facilitate the professional and personal development of teachers which is vital for achieving the goals of quality education. It is a matter of great pride that Banasthali which is world’s largest fully residential women’s University with Quacquarelli Symonds QS Four Star Ranking and Diamond Status is one such centre for Faculty Development.

Chemical Engineering is undoubtedly a highly interdisciplinary field of study concerned with materials and processes at the heart of a broad range of technologies. The expertise of chemical engineers is essential to production, marketing, and applications in such areas as biochemical engineering, polymer, geology, energy efficient processes, process safety and hazard analysis, reaction engineering, environmental science & engineering and nanotechnology. Increasingly chemical engineers are involved in new technologies employing highly novel materials whose unusual response at the molecular level endows them with unique properties.

The theme attracted faculty members from diverse disciplines and 30 participants registered for the program which was inaugurated by alumnus of IIT Roorkee Shri Amit Kumar Scientific Officer F Nuclear Power Corporation of India NPCIL Rawatbhata Rajasthan on 21 Jul 2018 with a talk on Challenges in Nuclear Power Technology. Prof Saral Kumar Gupta from Banasthali Physics Department, Prof Jaya Dwivedi Dean Life Sciences and Prof Sarvesh Paliwal Dean Instructions Banasthali also graced the inaugural function.

After an innovative e-lamp lighting, participant Ms Priyanka Bisht presented a colorful bouquet to Shri Amit Kumar while Prof Satish Shukla did the Banasthali honour of welcoming with a traditional Khadi garland.

Mr Amit Kumar put the case of nuclear energy vs other sources of energy in the most convincing manner. When he highlighted the nuclear capabilities of India, the faces of participants were indeed beaming with pride. The power generation technologies with natural uranium - heavy water reactors, enriched uranium - light water reactors, Thorium Breeder Reactors were explained in detail.

When he mentioned that Unit 5 of RAPS Rajasthan Atomic Power Station is world’s second longest running reactor and he had been closely associated with its operation for many years brought a thunderous round of applause. The details of safety features of the nuclear power plant were indeed an eye opener for the participants.

The inaugural session ended with Prof Satish Shukla presenting a glittering memento to Mr Amit Kumar. Prof BR Natarajan anchored the proceedings.
