Climate conference in Copenhagen: Avoiding catastrophic

Bizerba is focussing on green IT recommendations

Balingen, 9th December 2009 - The climate conference in Copenhagen has begun and its goal is clear: Avoid the catastrophic consequences of global warming. According to the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (http://www.bmu.de), the global temperature must not exceed a level two degrees above those of the pre-industrial era.

In order to slow global warming down, developed nations must be operating practically CO2-free by 2050. Just on its own, information and communication technology causes CO2 emissions on a par with those from air travel. For Germany, it is all about actively helping to shape a global structural change in the future and not losing contact.

Bizerba is therefore focussing on green IT recommendations: “For the cooling of the machines in our computer centre, air conditioning systems with Free-Cooling-Function use air from outside for cooling at the colder time of year. Additional cooling equipment only operates on hot days. Thereby, energy usage is markedly reduced," says Matthias Harsch, spokesman of the board of Bizerba. http://bizerba.com.

“Furthermore, every one of our 3,100 members of staff can make their own contribution to the protection of the environment by way of upholding green principles,” adds Harsch. "Through small actions, the energy balance is improved, for example through doing away with the standby mode on computers.” According to Harsch, the increasing use of video conferencing also makes lots of travelling obsolete and therefore makes a contribution to the protection of the environment.
