With the outsourcing of Information Technology (IT) becoming more popular in the small and medium business (SME)arena, many businesses are looking to go completely infrastructure-free across both public and private sectors by outsourcing all IT support. This growing trend suggests that in years to come the role of the internal IT department will be superfluous, experts at software specialist company DMC Software Solutions predict.

IT support is being transferred to external sources, which assume responsibility for the day-to-day IT management. Outsourcing IT support is becoming especially more popular with SMEs, DMC Software Solutions has observed. The company works with several SMEs.

Traditionally, companies have maintained an in-house IT department to take care of their IT management. However, the researching, maintaining and updating of both software and hardware is becoming increasingly complicated as technology advances.

By outsourcing IT management these associated risks and uncertainties are removed, thus reducing unnecessary pressure placed upon a business, DMC Software Solutions experts explain.

DMC Software Solutions’ Rebecca Haines says: “The benefits of outsourcing IT management are obvious, IT support providers can offer fantastic services at a fraction of the cost required to maintain a comparable service internally.

“By outsourcing IT support businesses will have access to an experienced team with relevant expertise, HR costs will be reduced, in-house staff allocation will be improved and you will not need to pay to update staff training. In the long term, a company can reduce their overall spend without any impact on the systems used and the support received.”

While Outsourcing IT management can provide many advantages, there is one key factor that needs to be considered when outsourcing IT support; the company’s reputation, this dynamic is frequently overlooked by organisations.

The DMC Software Solutions expert explains: “What if the supplier lets you down? When appointing a supplier you need to look for a company that you can trust. It is important to carry out a risk assessment exercise to breakdown key factors and assess how these might be affected by IT service issues.”

Outsourcing IT support is a cost effective way of relieving the burden of keeping business systems running smoothly. By implementing a rigorous assessment process businesses can ensure that value is added to the organisation by changing the way in which IT is supported.
