A Sage and Wise Choice Between Sage 50 (Simply Accounting) And Quickbooks

Brandon, MB––November 27, 2021: Sage 50 previously known as Peachtree or Simply Accounting traces its roots back to 1976 as part of The Computer SystemCenter – a microcomputer dealer. Peachtree was included in the initial launch of the first IBM PCs in 1981. By 1984, Peachtree was the seventh largest microcomputer software company generating nearly $22 million in revenue.
Sage Group acquired Peachtree in the late 1990s and changed the product name to Sage 50 US in 2012. The product line was adding 100,000 new customers annually during that time period according to news reports. Today, Sage 50 is a comprehensive accounting software offering mostly designed for smaller businesses with up to 40 named users. It is deemed a robust small business desktop accounting application that incorporates comprehensive financial tools and generous customization options.

The software’s biggest advantage is its integration with Microsoft 365. This supersedes the fact that Sage 50cloud must be installed on a local desktop to make full use of its features. A disadvantage is that the software is only available for Windows machines. Sage 50cloud is reportedly one of the more complex systems in some ways than even some of the best of the low-end accounting systems. It is this complexity, and the cost of subscribing that make it less appealing to smaller, simpler businesses.

The Sage 50cloud line consists of three plans, all of which require a 12-month subscription to Sage Business Care that automatically renews every year. Pro Accounting starts at $567 per year for one user. Premium Accounting starts at $850 per year for a single user and Quantum Accounting starts at $1,404 per year for one user. Although monthly pricing is available, it is hardly cost-effective. Integration with Microsoft Microsoft 365 Business Standard adds $15 per user per month paid monthly -$12.50 paid annually- to each plan.

In comparison to Sage, QuickBooks offers a number of plan options. QuickBooks Online has four plans to choose from. Although each different QuickBooks plan denotes a higher monthly cost, the differences between the plans are distinct and features available with each plan level provide a greater opportunity to customize the solution to one’s specific business. The large majority of Sage’s capabilities are available with QuickBooks’ Online plans- Simple Start and Essentials. QuickBooks, moreover, offers features that Sages does not provide in either of their plans, such as time tracking, bill pay and management, 1099 contractor management, and more.
