SIP SCOOTERSHOP on a Vespa mission in Laos & Thailand - or how to conquer the Mekong with 20 scooters, hot pot, and a lot of passion In mid-January, a few colleagues from the SIP Scootershop team took off their winter jackets, put on their helmets, and headed to Southeast Asia! This rolling adventure was organized by our friend Lome from Vintage Vespa Thailand in Bangkok, who is not only incredibly cheerful but also blessed with tremendous organizational skills. Spoiler alert: no travel agency in the world can book a trip like this - it comes from the heart.

Saturday, January 10 - Arrive, get on, roll away At 2:50 p.m., the SIP team lands at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport. Still a little crumpled from the flight, but highly motivated. After a short transfer, we continue with AirAsia at 6:20 p.m. to Udon Thani, where we arrive around 7:30 p.m.

And there they are: Lome, his crew, and 20 Vespas ready to go - spruced up and ready to roll, as if for an Italian-Thai state visit. At around 8:00 p.m., we roll straight from the airport to the Hotel Vela Dhi Udon. First ride, first smiles, first "Okay, this is going to be legendary" moments.

In the evening, the first culinary highlight awaits: hot pot dinner with the local Udon Vespa gang, right by the koi pond. Bubbling broths, fresh ingredients, cold beer, loud laughter. There's no better way to start a trip. Overnight stay in Udon. Sunday, January 11 - Across the Mekong to Laos

Today it's going international: Vespa ride to Vientiane, the capital of Laos. The Mekong serves as a relaxed natural border between Thailand and Laos. Wide, majestic, definitely not drinkable - and yet somehow calming. Lunch is served on a boat on the Mekong as we sail downstream. As if that weren't kitschy enough, we also take part in a Thai-Laotian good luck ceremony, lay flowers on a sacred stone, and collectively hope for good roads, full plates, and intact piston rings. In the evening: an exquisite dinner and then a rooftop bar with a view over Vientiane. Lights, balmy air, cold drinks - the perfect end to our first day in Laos.

Monday, January 12 - Highway to Vang Vieng & party by the river Today, we have 129 km on the highway to Vang Vieng on the agenda. Vang Vieng is known for its dramatic karst landscape, rivers, caves, and sunsets that even hardened Instagram influencers quietly gulp at.

Our resort is... let's say: inappropriately beautiful. Then it's straight into adventure: kayaks, river, splashing water, beer, occasional loss of control - all inclusive. In the evening? Hot pot dinner again, of course, because if something works, it gets repeated. Then massages, drinks, music, party at the Sakura Bar and the classic realization: tomorrow we're riding the Vespa again.

Tuesday, January 13 - Blue Lagoons & Balloon Ride A leisurely Vespa ride to the famous Blue Lagoons of Vang Vieng. The first one was a little too shady for us - luxury problems - so we moved on to the next one. Turquoise blue water, jungle all around, vacation mode at full throttle.

In the evening, an absolute highlight: a hot air balloon ride over Vang Vieng at sunset. We rode our Vespas right up to the basket of the balloon, of course. Below us were rice fields, rivers, mountains - above us, only the sky. And for a few minutes, even the biggest chatterboxes were silent. (Briefly.) Wednesday, January 14 - Train ride to Luang Prabang

The Vespas get a break as we take the train to Luang Prabang - a UNESCO World Heritage Site and what feels like a living postcard. Lunch at the Bamboo Resort, followed by a tour of the former royal residence. History, culture, gold, Buddha - it's all there. Later, back to the Mekong, this time with the rumble of boat engines, beer, and the sun sinking dramatically in the west.

Dinner? Spectacular, of course, in the open-air Laos restaurant. Overnight stay in Luang Prabang. Thursday, January 15 - Cooking, waterfalls & night market Just a few steps from the hotel, we take part in a cooking class. This is accompanied by another ceremony performed by the local shaman, which is supposed to bring us luck for the rest of our journey. Afterwards, we take a trip to the Kuang Si waterfalls, where the water cascades down through turquoise pools. It's a place where you automatically speak more slowly. In the evening: Luang Prabang night market. Countless stalls, street food, handicrafts, smells, sounds. Vibrant, loud and yet somehow peaceful. A perfect last evening here.

Friday, January 16 - Back to Vang Vieng & on to Vientiane Back to Vang Vieng by train, then back on the Vespas and back to Vientiane on two wheels. A long but beautiful day of riding - not quite the kind of route that scooter trips were invented for, but we have plenty of curves and mountains at home. Overnight stay in Vientiane. Saturday, January 17 - Long ride to Khon Kaen

After coffee in a great bar in Vientiane, in a half-ruined French colonial house, we set off on the long haul: a 196 km Vespa ride to Khon Kaen. The scooters are running, the sun is beating down, and the mood is great. We visit the Power Scooter Shop and enjoy ice-cold beer from the freezer.

In Khon Kaen, the Vespas are loaded onto a two-story truck and transported back to Bangkok overnight. We treat ourselves to beds, air conditioning, and a horizontal lifestyle before flying back the next day. Sunday, January 18 - Bangkok & Chinatown Back in Bangkok: unload the scooters, dive into the traffic chaos, and head to Chinatown. Narrow alleys, food markets, backyard kitchens, wild traffic, and smells ranging from "fantastic" to "bold." Later, we relax with Lome and his family at his dock: Vintage Vespa Thailand in Chinatown - a place full of history, scooters, friendship, and cold drinks. Anyone coming to Bangkok should definitely plan a visit here: Song Wat Road is one of the hottest streets in Bangkok. The highlight for Vespa fans is Vintage Vespa Thai, located right on the Chao Phraya River. In the evening, there's music and cold drinks for sundowners starting at 5 p.m. Add to that the charming Mandarin Tea House with great coffee and cocktails, as well as the Frairy beauty salon. All your senses will be catered for here - and there are lots of old Vespas to see and a positive vibe. Bangkok is loud, hot, sometimes overwhelming, but always warm, always lively - and it always has a smile for you. Monday, January 19 - Celebrating Bangkok Today, the city is celebrated: streets, temples, caf?s, traffic, scooters, food stalls, sweating, enjoying. You don't just leave Bangkok behind - you soak it up, despite the smog. In the evening, we celebrate our ambassador Poldo's 50th birthday with a BBQ. Honestly: there's no better way to end a birthday - and a day. Overnight stay in Bangkok.

Tuesday, January 20 - Lambretta Thailand & farewell Last day. We weave our way through the traffic once more and visit Toon, the local Lambretta dealer, and his impressive collection. Toon has been a customer of ours for many years and is a good friend. He effortlessly manages the balancing act between classic and modern Lambrettas. Be sure to visit the Lambretta Thailand Cafe when you're in Bangkok.

At night, we head back to Germany - with tired eyes, full memory cards, and thoughts that are definitely still somewhere between the Mekong and Chinatown. Report online: https://sip.shop/videolaos High-resolution photos: https://adobe.ly/3YSWQlL
