Vespa Cross race MATSCHO KARATSCHO #3 was a complete success
Dust, dirt and a lot of funLandsberg - The unmistakable sound of Vespa engines could be heard from afar last Saturday and a large cloud of dust lay over the race track on the grounds of the SIP Scootershop in Landsberg. For the third time, the market leader in the trade of scooter accessories and spare parts had invited to the "Matscho Karatscho", a cross race for Vespas, Lambrettas and other scooters, which competed in three different classes on the in-house race track.
With participants from Germany, Italy, Austria, France and Switzerland, an international field of riders had gathered to compete against each other on the 470-meter-long circuit with pendulum, water ditch, seesaw, washboard and various jumps. The highlight of the course is the 180-degree banked turn, which the daredevil drivers can take at full throttle. Henri Mouries from Mormoiron in the south of France had the longest journey of around 1,000 kilometers and describes the fascination of this racing sport: "I was already a BMX rider as a child and from 1987 to 1995 we organized Vespa Cross races in the south of France. When I heard about the event at SIP Scootershop, I just had to take part. For me, it's not about placing, but about having fun."
The joy of riding and meeting like-minded people was the main focus of this event. Around 1,000 visitors marveled at the spectacle with the daredevil maneuvers of the pilots on their converted scooters. DAZN commentator and ice hockey legend Harald Birk hosted the varied program together with SIP race director Jesco Schmidt, who was delighted with the event in the end: "Everything went brilliantly. We had very exciting races right to the end and there was only positive feedback from the riders. Our team worked really well together. Most importantly: apart from a slightly bruised rib, there were no injuries."
Tough competition, party together
After qualifying, the riders started the races in their classes and in the end, the overall winner of all classes was crowned in the "Best of All". Local hero Max Heigl from Landsberg dropped out early on with a technical defect, meaning that Stefan Göllner from North Rhine-Westphalia on a Vespa GTS 300 with a KTM engine was able to secure the day's victory and conjure up a fabulous time of 55.471 seconds in the dust.
However, in the final team event, the so-called "Endurance Race", in which several riders have to share a scooter and hold out for 60 minutes, he and Andy Bode lost out and victory went to the Altmann/Pensel team.
After the trophies had been presented, the champagne sprayed and the winners crowned, all the riders, mechanics, marshals and fans got together to celebrate into the night with pizza and cold drinks. Even if the battle on the race track is intense, the riders share a passion for the Vespa and other two-wheelers. Ralf Jodl, CEO of SIP Scootershop and organizer, sums up: "The third Matscho Karatscho also offered a great show, exciting racing and great entertainment for all spectators. But for us, the focus is on the community of scooter fans and the collegial interaction with each other. Once again it was shown that the Vespa connects people across all national borders. One visitor traveled from Tel Aviv especially for the weekend..."
