Readers' opinions in demand: Interactive surveys promote dialog and opinion-forming
M. Schall Verlag's independent publication platform has introduced a new poll function that readers can now use to vote on socially relevant topics. The polls appear both directly in thematically relevant articles and in alternating order in the right-hand sidebar. This adds an interactive component to the previously purely editorial offering. The aim of the new module is to make the diversity of opinions visible without having to rely on external platforms or social media. The surveys are completely anonymous and GDPR-compliant. Users can express their views on current issues with just a few clicks - without registering and without cookies.
Social relevance instead of clickbait: topics with substance
The first series comprises ten current surveys from very different areas: Trust in the media and politics, the reintroduction of compulsory military service, the case of tension in Germany, dealing with digitalization, the future of cash in times of the digital euro, or even questions about one's own crisis preparedness in the event of a possible case of tension in Germany.
There are also surveys on special topics such as CMD (craniomandibular dysfunction), the use of local AI such as MLX or Ollama, and the future role of FileMaker in a working world transformed by AI. Creative questions, such as the motivation to write your own books, are also part of the survey spectrum.
Platform-independent and multilingual - a European approach
All surveys are available in multiple languages - currently in nine European languages. This makes them interesting not only for a German-speaking audience, but also for readers from France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Turkey and other countries.
Focus on data protection - deliberately kept simple
The technical implementation of the surveys follows a clear principle: as much interaction as necessary, as little data as possible. No personal data is collected, no cookies are set and no user profiles are created. Tracking is also completely dispensed with.
"I wanted to create a format that enables genuine expression of opinion - but without the usual side effects," explains operator Markus Schall. "That's why we deliberately avoided external tools and unnecessary data storage. Anyone who takes part can do so with a good feeling - anonymously and without obligation."_
A mirror of the times: current topics, real questions
The first ten surveys cover a broad spectrum: from trust in politics and the media, digitalization in everyday life and the reintroduction of compulsory service, to more complex topics such as CMD symptoms, the introduction of the digital euro or the question of how well prepared people are for a possible case of tension.
Further surveys planned - thematically in line with the editorial focus
The survey module is to be continuously expanded in future. New questions on social, political and technological developments are already in preparation. Existing articles will be supplemented with suitable surveys as required, creating a natural link between content and participation.
"Feedback from my readers is important to me," says Schall. "And a survey is often the first step towards really getting to grips with a topic - not just reading passively, but taking an internal position."
Frequently asked questions about the new poll function
* What distinguishes these surveys from typical online voting or commercial survey tools?
The surveys on MarkusSchall.de are deliberately kept simple, without advertising, tracking or registration - and they do not pursue any commercial interest. While many commercial tools collect data or evaluate it for marketing purposes, the focus here is on genuine opinion-forming in a social context. It's not about leads, but about reflection.
* How is data protection guaranteed?
All surveys are completely anonymous. No cookies are set, no personal data is stored and no external services are integrated. IP addresses are also not logged in a readable form. The technical implementation was designed in such a way that maximum restraint is exercised - in accordance with the GDPR. The platform does not use any tracking and does not process any personal data.
* Which topics will be the focus in future?
The surveys are based on current social, political, technological or cultural developments - for example, questions on digitalization, political orientation, health awareness, AI, education, media trust or the economic future. Readers are encouraged to engage with topics that affect them personally - or could affect them in the future.
* Can the survey results be viewed or compared later?
Immediately after casting their vote, users can see the percentage distribution of previous answers - but (still) without absolute figures. This prevents new visitors from being influenced by low numbers of participants. The plan is to publish regular evaluations in the form of articles - with interesting country comparisons and anonymized trends.
* Who is behind the project and what are the aims?
The initiator of the surveys is Markus Schall, entrepreneur, author and operator of several online platforms. His aim is to create an independent magazine that encourages people to think without forcing them into preconceived narratives. The surveys are part of this concept: they create interaction, encourage self-reflection and can also serve as a mood barometer in confusing times.

Group show ‘Local Paintings’ at Markus Winter in Berlin
‘Local Paintings’ is questioning the concept of the ‘international style’ in modernist art. Apart from being often associated with an individual relationship to the artwork or the focus on personal expression, the title evokes a connection between the painting and the world outside the gallery/studio walls, a relationship repressed by modernist art theory.
The show confronts the work of four painters, of different nationalities, with different educational, professional and social backgrounds…
