Drug Discovery, Life Sciences and Biotechnology Responsible

Mass Spectrometry has been applied in life science research for over 40 years. Over these years several technological advancements have evolved to cater specific requirements in various life science areas. The mass spectrometry market had observed an all-time low between 2008 and 2010, largely due to economic crisis that took place globally. This has changed as MS has observed a progressive growth due to increasing demand from research facilities, increased government funding in healthcare and life science, increasing demand from developing countries particularly in Asia, Middle East and South America. The increasing demand came particularly as drug discovery and development growth spurt took place since patent expiry of several billion dollar blockbuster API?s were expected to lose patent in the coming few years. Generic companies who were experts in reverse engineering of drugs in India, Brazil and China among a few others increased investment in healthcare research funding which has further fuelled the investment of research facilities in better equipment and tools.

Mass spectrometers are made up of 3 major components namely, an ionization source (MALDI, FT-Ion Cyclotron Resonance, SELDI and ICP), a mass analyzer (quadrupole, TOF, Ion Trap and OrbiTrap) and mass detectors. Besides the above components, there are numerous other parts and equipment required for the manufacturing of mass spectrometers. Companies manufacturing accessories and components for MS systems form the major suppliers. Buyers include academic facilities, research facilities, pharma/biopharma companies developing drugs among several other industries. The global mass spectrometry technologies market was estimated to be US$ 3,328.8 million in 2014 and expected to grow to US$ 4,846.0 million by 2019 at a CAGR of 7.8% from 2015 to 2019 coaxed by a growth in drug discovery research particularly in oncology, gynecology, cardiology and brain disorders. New applications such as epigenetics and metabolomics are expected to give a significant push in research. Table-top and portable MS devices may bring about an unknown impact factor to the demand of these devices. Metabolomics in particular is a very strong application that is expected to propel the usage of MS systems worldwide.

As emerging countries become at par with developed regions in terms of research and development activity due global outsourcing of clinical research and institutional investment, the demand for high-tech MS technologies is expected to rise to unprecedented levels. The miniaturization of mass spectrometry systems will usher a new era in the field of mass spectrometry. Several companies and engineering research institutions have been attempting to miniaturize the size of mass spectrometers for on-field applications. Companies such as Kore Technology, now offer portable mass spectrometers that can suit on-site applications for gas analysis that could be helpful in mining, petroleum and determining air quality. Additional advances such as improved techniques have begun making their way into the field. The conventional Time-Of-Flight technique has been modified to also calculate velocity at which the distance is travelled and the new technique Distance-Of-Flight a velocity based separation technique is now gaining pace in several applications. These advances are expected to propel the growth of the market in coming years.

The global geographical analysis of the mass spectrometry technologies market is segregated into six regions of North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Middle-East and Africa. The regional analysis of the market follows a rigorous and in-depth scrutiny of several factors such as economy, political and social scenario, technological, legal and environmental overview of the region. This macro-economic view of the market is expected to help market players understand the potential of emerging economies in Asia, Middle-East and Latin America.
