Tai Chi Chuan Spreads to Community Groups Through Mini-Grants
(Long Island, NY) The Roselie Brenner Tai Chi Fund, managed by Hempstead-based social service agency EAC Network, awarded five mini-grants of up to $1,000 to Long Island-based community groups to develop sustainable projects and activities that promote active participation in Tai Chi Chuan programs. The winning applications included Youth Directions and Alternatives in East Northport to provide a series of ten free Tai Chi classes for at-risk youth at their Northport Teen Recreation Center, Family and Children’s Association in Mineola to provide Tai Chi class at no cost to residents in both their homeless youths and veterans shelters, the Patchogue-Medford Library in Patchogue to host two Tai Chi presentations, in both English and Spanish, which will target the area’s rapidly growing, underserved, Hispanic community, the Jewish Association Serving the Aging in Mineola to offer a series of ten Tai Chi classes in their Long Beach and Jewell Quinn (North Merrick) Senior Community Service Centers, which serve seniors age 60+, and the Pederson-Krag Center in Smithtown, to hold free Tai Chi classes for participants in the women’s addiction recovery programs at their Wyandanch and Huntington sites.
Roselie Brenner was a passionate practitioner and teacher of Tai Chi Chuan. On a very personal level, she felt Tai Chi had a profound and positive influence on her life. As a result, she wanted others to enjoy Tai Chi and experience its many benefits, and in her memory the Roselie Brenner Tai Chi Fund at EAC Network was founded.
“The fund’s committee, made up of dedicated volunteers who were touched by Roselie’s spirit, has been committed to continuing her work through the promotion of Tai Chi,” noted Angie Malone, Division Director of Health Services at EAC Network. “We know that Tai Chi benefits the mind, body and spirit. Our awardees have excellent programs planned, and we look forward to watching their progression and learning of their impact on their communities.”
