Newsday Charities, a McCormick Foundation Fund, Grants $40,000 to Combat Child Abuse and Empower Parents
Local human service agency EAC Network is proud to be the recipient of a $40,000 grant through Newsday Charities, a McCormick Foundation fund, in support of its Long Island Parenting Institute (LIPI), which enhances outcomes for children by strengthening families and empowering mothers and fathers to become confident and effective parents. This is the sixth consecutive year that Newsday Charities has dedicated funding to LIPI; previous support included a number of EAC Network programs that protect children such as Chance to Advance for youth in foster care and Nassau Supervised Visitation.
“According to the National Children’s Alliance, in 2016 over 18,400 child victims of sexual and physical abuse were served at accredited Child Advocacy Centers in New York State alone. Of the more than 13,000 alleged offenders, almost 52% were parents or stepparents, and sadly represent only those cases that were reported and prosecuted,” reported Kathryn Cannino, MS, CFLE, LIPI’s Program Director. “Parenting education and intervention serve as preventative factors against abuse and are essential to alleviate the negative cycle. We are honored that Newsday Charities, a McCormick Foundation fund, has once again chosen to combat child abuse by helping us educate and empower parents.”
LIPI’s solution is to prevent child abuse and limit negative outcomes by utilizing parenting best practices and by promoting protective factors that include increasing parent resilience, educating parents on child development and the social/emotional competence of children, creating social connections, and providing concrete support in times of need.
To maximize program effectiveness, LIPI uses evidence-based curricula and tools such as Common Sense Parenting and Bright Beginnings to provide a strong educational foundation for parents and to encourage them to redefine and strengthen their relationships with their children. Targeted training strategies promote positive family interaction, give parents the opportunity to practice skills in class, teach emotional communication skills, raise awareness of children’s development, and facilitate healthy bonding.
