Rapping and Twerking on Stage at Malawi Adventist University

Wongani Ngwira is a student at Malawi Adventist University who is pursuing a degree in business management. He is also a rap artist who goes by the stage name Mandy Mzembe. In videos posted on December 30, 2023, by Gogo Movement, a non-profit entertainment organization associated with the Adventist rapper, Mandy Mzembe recently performed some of his rap songs on stage at Malawi Adventist University. The videos featured students dancing, including twerking, to some of his rap songs. Twerking is a dance style where participants move their hips and buttocks in the most provocative way possible.

This type of behavior is not only unfit for our institutions, but it also harms, degrades morality, and corrupts the youth. This kind of worldly, provocative entertainment is what unbelievers seek. These kinds of displays appeal to the unconverted. Spirit-filled Christians don't need or seek out sexually suggestive dancing, fast and repetitive hip movements, buttocks shaking, or other abominable idolatries that feed the flesh rather than the Spirit.

This sort of amusement has no place in any Seventh-day Adventist instruction, as it serves as a substitute for God's sanctifying and ennobling truths. Regrettably, instead of letting the Bible define who we are, we have university administrators who allow the outside world to define the church. Again, this kind of entertainment is being brought in to appease the unconverted in our midst. Consequently, this renders us no different from the world's theaters, dance halls, and concerts. The same biblical moral imperative is still necessary today to guide us back toward God's perfect will:

"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." Romans 12:2.
