direct/ EUROFORUM Deutschland GmbH: 14th Handelsblatt Annual Congress on "Strategic IT Management"

28-30 January 2008, in Berlin

- US companies are more productive
- More IT growth through private consumption
- IT Strategy Award presented for the fourth time

Berlin/Düsseldorf, November 2007. London´s Centre of Economic Performance (CEP), one of Europe´s leading university research institutes, has discovered why US businesses achieve an increasingly higher rate of return on each hour worked. This holds true almost exclusively in those industries where information technology (IT) plays a particularly important role. US multinational companies invest more in IT and realise larger productivity gains for each dollar invested than European MNCs. This can be attributed to the hierarchical structures and less flexible task assignments in European companies. US businesses adapt their organisational structures more quickly to the requirements and opportunities of new technologies, decision-making processes are more efficient and IT innovations are, therefore, implemented much faster. "Without making changes to the internal organisation, additional IT investments do not make any significant difference," says CEP Director John Van Reenen.
(Handelsblatt, 6 June 2007).

Eight per cent growth for the IT industry
At the 14th International Handelsblatt Annual Conference on "Strategic IT Management" (28-30 January 2008, in Berlin), IT experts such as Peter Sondergaard (Gartner), Peter Sany (Deutsche Telekom), Natarajan Chandrasekaran (Tata Consultancy Services), Dr Thomas Endres (Deutsche Lufthansa) and Karl-Erich Probst (BMW) will discuss the role of IT in innovations and transformations. Consumer IT is another topic which is receiving more and more attention. Garner forecasts an overall growth rate of eight per cent in the IT industry for this year, and five per cent for the next. In 2008, private consumption will be the driving force, according to Gartner´s Chief Analyst Peter Sondergaard. The market for business IT is projected to grow by only three per cent in 2008.
(Computerzeitung, 6 November 2007).

Recognising the best IT strategy for 2008
Another highlight of the congress is the award ceremony recognising the best IT strategy, on 29 January 2008. The award will go to the IT strategy that, under the given market and corporate conditions, has shown itself to be especially effective from the point of view of business support, competitiveness and practicability. The award underlines the importance of strategic IT application at company level. The Handelsblatt will present this award for the fourth time. The programme and award are also described in detail on the Internet at: www.konferenz.de/dne-strat08
