The Most Expensive Skills to Train in OSRS 2023

Here are the skills that will drain your bank and sink your gold whenever you're training them.

Skilling up in Old School RuneScape is one of the main activities you can do. With soon 24 skills to train to 99, each with a broad or more restricted range of training methods, there's always XP to gain. If you're already rich in the game, growing a new account, or even training new OSRS accounts for sale, you might want to gain some fast levels, often at the price of spending loads of OSRS GP.

With the expensive skill, there's rarely any way around it, and you'll most likely spend loads of gp on leveling them. There's rarely a way around spending, but it often comes with the price of very slow XP per hour.

Construction

Construction is the most expensive skill in Old School RuneScape because regardless of your training method, you will still spend a lot, even as an ironman. That's because making planks requires coins, even for Ironman, regardless of your plank make method.

Herblore

Herblore is as expensive as Construction, but you have a cheap or profitable alternative in herb degriming. However, the XP rates for herb degrime are considerably much lower than the expensive methods, so more often than not, it is much more worth spending your time on a more profitable activity and then using the profits to buy the herblore ingredients.

If you're an ironman, this skill won't be expensive, but gathering the ingredients will be very slow, grindy, and time-consuming. For some pots, you might even buy some of the secondary ingredients very cheap from various shops around Gielinor, for example, eyes of newt.

Fletching

Fletching is another expensive skill, but only if you consider the fastest methods involving fletching darts. Similar to herblore, the fast methods give considerably more XP per hour than the cheap or profitable methods, so more often than not, many players might find it more lucrative just to spend their GP on the fastest method and make more money with other more profitable methods, especially since the click intensity for even the cheap methods is not very low.

Prayer

Prayer is yet another expensive skill where the alternative methods are extremely slow. This is because for regular accounts, the main training methods involve buying various types of bones, such as dragon bones, from the grand exchange and then using them either on a player-owned lit gilded altar, the altar in the chaos temple in the wilderness, or the ectophuntus after grinding the bones and obtaining bonemeal and slime.

Alternatively, you can buy ensouled heads from the grand exchange, reanimate them with various spells from the Arceuus spellbook, and kill the reanimated monsters for the prayer XP. As an ironman, you'd need to collect both the bones and the heads so that the skill progression will be much slower. However, prayer represents one of the best investments since you'll save on prayer potions.

Crafting

Crafting is a moderately expensive skill where the slowest options are relatively slow compared to the other expensive skills, where the difference between the slow and fast methods is excellent. The peaks are not as fast as or expensive as for other skills, but you will still spend quite a lot unless you're patient and claim your battlestaves from Zaff every day with various tiers of the Varrock diary completed.

Magic

Training your magic skill can also be expensive based on the training method you use because you consume runes or weapon charges. A prevalent method to train magic, especially for low levels, is splashing. The advantage is that this is a very AFK method where you can have long AFK periods of up to 20 minutes, but you will spend on runes, and depending on your level and what spell you are using, the costs can add up. At higher levels, barrage spells such as blood, smoke, or ice barrage are a fast but expensive way to train magic. Thus players often combine them with Slayer tasks with monsters such as Dust devils or Nechryael to cover up some of the cost or, depending on luck, make a bit of profit. However, slower methods to train magic will bring you some GP, such as plank-making with the lunar spell book.
