MES Model Examiner® at Volkswagen: Interface Optimization in the Model-based Process

Press release from: Model Engineering Solutions GmbH

Berlin, 18.03.2014 - The function range of the software tool MES Model Examiner® has been considerably enhanced. In addition to verifying TargetLink, ASCET and Simulink models, it now supports the checking of Excel documents containing requirements and interface definitions. Volkswagen is one of the first to deploy this latest version.

Designed by Model Engineering Solutions (MES), the Berlin-based expert for model-based development, the software tool MES Model Examiner® has undergone substantial functional enhancement in the last couple of years. Originally designed for the formal verification of software models to check their compliance with modeling guidelines, it now offers comprehensive verification of model quality, efficiency and complexity, such as the verification of interface definitions often documented in Excel spreadsheets. These are extremely important due to the complex supply chains in the automotive industry.

The design of new software components is becoming increasingly specialized in the automotive industry and encompasses a wide range of internal and external suppliers, besides OEMs. This puts the focus on the interface quality between components. Volkswagen has reacted by setting up an interface quality optimization project. “We use the tools and the know-how of MES to improve the integration of software components,” says Bernd Kunkel, Head of Gateway and Data Definition at Volkswagen, “fast verification of the consistence of specifications leads to great efficiency gains for us.” Volkswagen plans to extend the deployment of these established tools and processes to further departments, to assure interface quality even earlier.

Model Engineering Solutions (MES) specializes in integrated quality assurance of embedded software in vehicles. The MES Quality Commander® is a dynamic management and reporting tool for software development and delivers key data throughout the software life cycle, providing an optimal basis for decision-making. The MES Model Examiner® (MXAM) is the market-leading tool for checking quality guideline consistency of Simulink®, TargetLink®, and ASCET models. MES Test Manager® implements the requirements-based approach in model-based development perfectly. MES supports its clients with consulting services and customized training programs for the introduction and improvement of model-based development processes, the deployment of new standards such as AUTOSAR, or the fulfillment of new requirements such as ISO 26262. Amongst MES`s clients are major OEMs and suppliers from the automotive industry. MES is a TargetLink Strategic Partner of dSPACE GmbH and a Product Partner of MathWorks and ETAS.
