Creative Campaign for WorldWaterDay 2013: 2nd International Quilt Block Swap with the Motto „Water“

Munich, March 22, 2013: Right in time for the World Water Day, the online magazine “Quilt around the World” is starting a new global patchwork project today: the 2nd International Block Swap. This time, the motto is “water.”

“The United Nations declared 2013 as the ‘Year of International Water Cooperation.’ We use this appeal as an opportunity to dedicate our 2nd International Block Swap to the theme “water – our elixir of life and most valuable resource on our planet,” states Jutta Hufnagel, managing director of Quilt around the World GmbH. “We would like to invite passionate quilters around the globe to give some personal thought to this important topic and express their creative ideas in a multinational and intercultural textile project.”

The participants are asked to sew nine patchwork blocks in shades of blue according to their individual taste and quilt mastery. The blocks will then be swapped within internationally mixed teams. In order to achieve a great diversity of block designs there are next to no technique, pattern or color restrictions. In the end, every participant will have the makings of a unique water quilt containing nine different patchwork blocks from nine quilters around the world.

Participation in the non-profit project is free. To cover the postage for the return of the individual quilt block sets 15 € or 25 US$ will be charged. As a small contribution for the preservation of the drinking water reservoirs of the earth, all monies left over will be donated to the environmental initiative Living Lakes, an international network under the patronage of the Global Nature Fund (www.globalnature.org). Living Lakes currently consists of 102 members on five continents, who work towards the sustainable conservation and protection of all lakes, wetlands and freshwater bodies of the world as healthy ecosystems.

The deadline for the finished patchwork blocks is December 31, 2013.

“There is a huge interest in our 2nd International Block Swap. Already weeks before the official start we have received several mails from quilt enthusiasts across Europe, North America, but also from Mexico, Abu Dhabi and Singapore, who would like to join in,” the organizer continues. “Therefore, we hope that we can build on the great success of our 1st International Block Swap and will even exceed the number of participants.”
