The ‘pergola stretch’ awning by markilux has received the ‘German Innovation Award’ 2021

The new large-format ‘pergola stretch’ by markilux can rejoice in being awarded yet another prize. The ‘German Innovation Award’ was recently conferred on it by the German Design Council in Frankfurt am Main in the competition class ‘Excellence in Business to Business - Building & Elements’ in the category ‘Winner’.

The raison d'être of new products is that they offer something new and bring additional benefits. Not infrequently, they seize on a trend and service needs that ensue from them. This is also true of the markilux ‘pergola stretch’.

The aim to create a large amount of free space has been achieved

It is the ambition of this awning supported by posts at the front to turn terraces and patios into an attractive outdoor area that can be used for as long as possible throughout the year. It fulfils the end consumer's wish for a spacious open area to be created that at the same time is protected against sun, wind and rain. Its sophisticated technology, which makes impressive dimensions possible, convinced the German Design Council in Frankfurt to confer the ‘German Innovation Award’ 2021 on it. it received the prize of ‘Winner’ in the competition class ‘Excellence in Business to Business - Building & Elements’.

Creating something grand with new ideas

‘The size factor stood pretty near the top of our wish list when developing the awning’, says Michael Gerling, Director of R&D and Production at markilux. He emphasises: ‘In order to breathe life into a 'pergola' version in XXL format, we first needed a particularly powerful drive system and an alternative means of transporting the cover.’ He adds that this was successful with the development of the new toothed drive system and space-saving folding cover technology. In his view, the model is an awning full of superlatives which even as a single unit can already span an area of almost 50 square metres and when coupled up to 175 square metres.

Another success story for the product history book

As such, the ‘stretch version’ is apt for use on both patios in private gardens as well as for al fresco terrace dining areas he adds. All the more so because waterproof and highly flame-retardant fabric is employed. The ‘German Innovation Award’ is now the third prize in a row that this new allround weather protection system has conferred on the developers. At the beginning of the year the awning had already won the ‘German Design Award’ presented by the German Design Council and the ‘Innovation Prize’ awarded by the ‘R+T digital’. For Mr Gerling it is yet another success story in the product history of the company: ‘With us, every awning runs through a complex maturing process. Many hours of development work are invested in technology, functionality and design. If this means one wins several prizes straight away, it gives a motivational kick to develop the next technological leap and the next inspirational design.’ There are already ideas a plenty for those.
