Günter Schwegler showcases the company’s retrofit service on a Sirius C tool preset

Customers have been using many tool presetters from the successful KENOVA set line range for years, some for decades. They are particularly durable by being produced in stable grey cast iron or even mineral cast composite. The KELCH retrofitting service offers these customers a general overhaul of this equipment, which brings it up to the state of the art cost-effectively and sustainably – and even makes it Industry 4.0-compliant depending on the model.

There is always a focus on a general overhaul when companies are considering modifying their IT infrastructure, changing PCs or upgrading their instruments for networking within digitalised structures. “Many companies would like to integrate their equipment into Smart Factories and the cloud. In these cases, retrofitting is a lasting and cost-efficient solution, as the solid basic body is the most energy-intensive component in production. During a retrofit, we replace the critical components, such as camera technology, PCs or drive assemblies, and switch to the current software – and the customer usually has a sustainable virtually new, more intelligent device within a day,” reports Viktor Grauer, member of the Executive Board and Head of Innovation Management at KELCH.

Upgrade for older versions
The retrofitting service promise applies to almost all generations of KELCH tool presetters still in use. Even the Kalimat and Trabant models, some of which were manufactured before 2000, can be successfully upgraded. “Our tool presetters are durable and have a long service life. With regular maintenance, they continue to operate outstandingly even after decades. And there’s more: the cast components become better and better over the years – the older they are, the less warpage can occur,” explains Viktor Grauer. The reason for the long service life of the equipment is the high level of tool presetter design and development expertise within KELCH. The stable cast body and the tower are considerably less sensitive to temperature changes and machine vibrations. The resource-saving mineral cast composite used in the V9 instruments could be recycled at the end of its life and thus reused. Another major contributing factor to the longevity of our devices is the unrivaled stability and precision of the presetter spindle, also designed and built by KELCH. Special equipment of all kinds can also be retrofitted.

New functions and interfaces
When replaced, many components can be integrated with new functions, making the equipment compatible with Industry 4.0 standards and future-proofing it, thanks to the interface technology. A further benefit is the fact that companies do not need to procure new equipment for a retrofit. As a system supplier with over 75 years of experience, KELCH offers an individual consultation in addition to the general overhaul, for instance when companies are considering integrating a used device into a new IT environment or into recently networked processes. KELCH also has an extensive range of additional components, software and accessories facilitating customised extensions and adaptations.
