To stop abuse of natural resources and protect planet earth, World Environment Day WED is celebrated every year across the globe on 5 June. The United Nations designated 5 June as World Environment Day to highlight that the protection and health of the environment is a major issue, which affects the well-being of peoples and economic development throughout the world.

The celebration of this day provides us with an opportunity to broaden the basis for an enlightened opinion and responsible conduct by individuals, enterprises and communities in preserving and enhancing the environment. An ecosystem is a geographic area where plants, animals, and other organisms, as well as weather and landscape, work together to form a bubble of life. Ecosystems contain biotic or living, parts, as well as abiotic factors, or nonliving parts.

Over the centuries, humans have cut down mother Earth’s forests, polluted its rivers and ploughed its grasslands into oblivion. By doing so, humans have deprived themselves of their own food, water and other resources essential for survival. The degradation has already undermined the well-being of 3.2 billion people which is about 40% of the global population.

As much as 50 per cent of our coral reefs have already been lost and up to 90 per cent of coral reefs could be lost by 2050, even if global warming is limited to an increase of 1.5°C. But the earth is resilient and with some sense of responsibility and cooperation of people at large, it is possible to restore the ecosystems. In short, Ecosystem Restoration means preventing, halting and reversing the damages by abandoning the exploitation of nature and focus on healing.

COVID-19 has undoubtedly thrown a spanner into the WED 2021 celebrations but the zeal to celebrate is unstoppable. Due to COVID-19, with schools closed keeping the children engaged academically and culturally has become a serious challenge for many educational institutions in India today with a few exceptions such as JMA Pilani.

Keeping in mind Ecosystem Restoration which is the focus of 2021 World Environment Day with theme “Reimagine Recreate Restore” JMA Pilani Principal Mrs Natarajan gave a clarion call to all students and teachers to plant a sapling at their respective homes on 5 June 2021 or hold a sapling in hand to mark WED and send a photograph. Class 1 - 12 students were also urged to make drawing and posters to mark the occasion.

An ardent lover of nature, Principal Mrs Booma Natarajan cheered the school gardener Mahenderji and School Staff Madanji who did the sapling planting and triggered the celebrations. Hundreds of students poured photographs, drawings and posters to the WhatsApp groups of their respective classes thus making it a truly unforgettable day and talk of Pilani town.
