World’s Largest Fully Residential University Banasthali Rajasthan Celebrates International Youth Day 2019

Youth being enthusiastic, vibrant, innovative and dynamic in nature is the most important section of the population. Youth shows strong passion, motivation and will power which also make them the most valuable human resource for fostering economic, cultural and political development of a nation. A country’s ability and potential for growth is determined by the size of its youth population. While youth broadly is the life span between childhood and adulthood, there are different age group definitions for same worldwide: UN 15-24, WHO 15-34, G20 19-25, China 15-29, USA 16-34, Australia 15-24. Until recently India had put age group 13-35 as youth and the Youth Policy 2014 had redefined it as age 15-29.

12 August was first designated International Youth Day by the UN General Assembly in 1999, and from 2000 onwards has been serving as an annual celebration of the role of young women and men as essential partners in change, and an opportunity to raise awareness of challenges and problems facing the world’s youth. To quote UN Secretary-General António Guterres message for the day “Today, we celebrate the young people, youth-led organizations, Governments and others who are working to transform education and uplift young people everywhere.”

The eight decade old Banasthali with an unenviable legacy and heritage has established a rich tradition of observing various days of national and international importance round the year. The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication observed the ‘International Youth Day’ on 12th August, 2019 on the theme ‘Empowering Education’. Undeniably, education is a ‘development multiplier’ as it plays a pivotal role in accelerating progress across all Sustainable Development Goals SDGs of UN, be it poverty eradication, good health, gender equality, decent work and growth, reduced inequalities, action on climate or peaceful societies. Education should lead to relevant and effective learning outcomes, with the content of school curricula being fit for purpose, not only for the 4th industrial revolution and the future of work, but also for the opportunities – and challenges – brought by rapidly changing social contexts.

The crucial role that quality education plays in youth development is well recognized. In addition, comprehensive youth development benefits society-at-large. However, what is less known is the fact that young people themselves are active champions of inclusive and accessible education. Youth-led organizations, as well as individual youth, together with various stakeholders and Governments, are concretely transforming education so that it becomes a fundamental tool both for sustainable development and for the full inclusion of various social groups. For example, youth-led organizations are transforming education via lobbying and advocacy, partnerships with educational institutions, the development of complementary training programs, etc.

The Banasthali students presented their views focusing on Transforming Education for empowerment through a programme ‘Yuwaon Ki Awaz’ on Radio Banasthali 90.4 FM which highlighted the efforts to make education more relevant, equitable and inclusive for all youth, including efforts by youth themselves. The students distributed stationery to the children of nearby village under ‘campus to community programme’. Moreover, through posters, for the larger task of nation building, the students highlighted the importance of sex education and entrepreneurship.

When the celebrations concluded, the faculty and students came out with beaming faces and pride that they were indeed part of an institution which is a shining jewel in the crown among the eminent educational institutions not only in India today but also world at large.
