Path Breaking BSM Bharat Samriddhi Mark by Banasthali Dean Prof Harsh Purohit

It is very important for every nation that its people buy the products manufactured by the domestic companies, and particularly for a country like India which has a big problem of unemployment.

After pursuing the path of liberalization while on one hand India's - GDP Gross Domestic Product has gone up and the competitiveness of Indian industry and the farmers has also witnessed a rise but the question before nation at large is "Have we been able to ensure that India based companies are preferred by the citizens for buying the products, employment etc."

Being the largest fully residential women’s university in the world, Banasthali which is also one among the top ranking institution in India today has eight decades of legacy and heritage for shaping the education of women and contribute to the larger task of nation building. It is worth mentioning that Banasthali has been distinctively contributing to the nation by ensuring that all the 20,000 people in the campus are habitual wearers of Khadi.

Considering the fact that all times the Indian citizens also deserve products of good quality, in a first of its kind of initiative, Banasthali Dean Prof Harsh Purohit has comeup with a revolutionary proposal to establish Bharat Samriddhi Mark (BSM) comprising all those organisations which meet any 3 of the following criteria:
B1: 60% of the ownership is Indian.
B2: 50% of the staff is Indian
B3: 50% of the value of raw materials has originated from India which can be relaxed up-to 30% depending on the level of exports done by the organisation
B4: The destination of 70% of the donations given by the organisation is in India

After 3 years from the launch, the relaxation of any 3 out of the four should be removed, while after another 3 years, the benchmarks should be further tightened. The extent of bharatiyata could be measured using an index Bharat Samriddhi Mark Suchakank (BSMS). While B2 and B3 may carry 25% weightage each, the B1 and B4 may be accorded 40% and 10% weightage. Organisations with higher BSMS would denote higher contribution to the nation. For organisations offering services, the B3 may be suitably modified for instance for a bank, at least half of the entire funds should have an Indian origin.

While the international treaties or agreements may not permit the Government to endorse this revolution, the onus is on the Indians to come forward and carefully establish the standards to establish the BSM and consider it at least while buying a product. Lot of deliberations are required before the BSM and BSMM are finalized for instance it should be ensured that organisations do not offer significantly inferior products or services once they are eligible for inclusion under the BSM.

One of the ways could be establishing an independent quality check council. More-ever, funding for developing the framework and the procedures and the promotion also need a deep thought. However once a consensus has been arrived both of these could play a significant role in the development of the nation.

The BSM and BSMM concept developed after extensive research investigations at Banasthali Vidyapith (Institution Deemed to be University) by Prof. Harsh Purohit, Dean of the FMS-WISDOM and Faculty of Law, Jamnalal Bajaj School of Legal Studies under whose supervision about 100 Ph.Ds have been awarded.

Prof Harsh Purohit has also provided several others concepts rooted in Indian ethos and culture such as Bharatiya Model of Financial Literacy (BMFL), Bharatiya Model of Digital Literacy (BMDL), Holistic Decision making Model (HDMM), Holistic Electoral Competency Rating (HECR), Bharatiya Model of Employee Retention (BMER) and Work Life Natural Fusion (WLNF) and it is a matter of pride that most of these have been researched at doctoral level. Prof. Purohit has already received 8 awards for promotion of financial literacy among women.
