Banasthali Freshman Orientation on Glory of Chemical Engineering

In India today every institution has a name but only a few like eight decade old Banasthali have a legacy and heritage attracting over 16000 students from different parts of India in the 850 acre campus echoing the lines of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore in National anthem “Panjaba-Sindhu-Gujarata-Maratha Dravida-Utkala-Banga.”

Innovative Chemical Engineers - ICE Club of Banasthali which is known all over for organizing one of the most popular university campus events ZERONE took the initiative to assemble all first year Chemical Engineering students and faculty members on 04 Aug 2019 at SBI School of Commerce and Banking auditorium for a freshman welcome and orientation. Among the various clubs at Banasthali, Ice Club has the unique distinction for having raised INR 3.2 Lakhs for instituting a scholarship to a deserving student at Banasthali.

Prof BR Natarajan Head of Chemical Engineering welcomed the gathering and the session started with a video of Banasthali highlighting the evolution, growth and alumni achievements. This was followed by a slide show on Chemical Engineers Linus Pauling, Fritz Haber, Carl Bosch, Mario Molina, Gialio Natta, Lars Onsager, Martin Lewis Perl and Frances Hamilton Arnold who are also Nobel Laureates.

The presentation included over 40 Chemical Engineers whose contribution had changed the world at large. The Chemical Engineering freshmen were thrilled to know that mega corporations such as Procter and Gamble, Intel, General Electric, Coca Cola, Reliance had been headed by chemical engineers Victor Mills, Andre Grove, Jack Welch, Roberto Goizueta and Mukesh Ambani.

After a video on history of Chemical engineering, the faculty members and office staff of Chemical Engineering department were introduced to the students. It is indeed a matter of great pride that 50% of the 12 Chemical Engineering faculty at Banasthali are alumni of various IITs - Guwahati (1), Kanpur (1), Kharagpur (1), Roorkee (2) and Dhanbad (1) and the rest from BITS Pilani (1) and various NITs – Jaipur (3), Rourkela (1) and Jalandhar (1).

The highlights of the orientation included a video address by chemical engineering alumni of Banasthali Ms Medhavi Uniyal from New York USA, Ms Priyanka Bisht from Bangalore, Ms Aanchal Mehendiratta from Aditya Birla Group Lapanga (Orissa) and Isha Vasishta Mcdermott Gurugram.

Subsequent proceedings were conducted by ICE club with Shivani Mishra President giving the welcome address. Other Ice Club executives Himanshi Agrawal Vice president, Shivani Gupta Secretary , Diksha Goel and Laxmi Kumari treasurers answered a volley of questions posed by freshman. Third year coordinator Ms Aditi Agarwal, second year coordinators Ms Abeena Prolta and Harshita Paliwal did all the hand holding to make the event a grand success.

Proud to be Freshmen Banasthalites who attended the orientation left with beaming faces and pride that they were indeed part of an institution which is a shining jewel in the crown among the institutions not only in India today but across the globe.
