Talk on Glory of Chemical Engineering for Banasthali Sophomores

In India today, Banasthali which is one among the top ranking institution also stands as the world’s largest residential women’s university having more than 16,000 students on its 850-acre campus situated amidst rural setting in Rajasthan and having a distinct educational ideology and offering a variety of programmes from nursery up to doctoral-level across a wide spectrum of disciplines to prepare enlightened citizens with strong value-base.

The four year BTech curriculum at Banasthali has a common first year and the students start taking departmental courses from the sophomore year. While the freshmen welcome in the first year focuses on institution as a whole, the sophomore orientation focuses on the discipline under pursuit.

Welcoming the chemical engineering students to the department on 11 July 2019, Prof BR Natarajan Head of Chemical Engineering anchored a slideshow and gave an overview of the Chemical Engineers who changed the world which included Johann Rudolph Glauber, Nicholas Leblanc, Charles Edward Howard & Norbert Rillieux, Henry Bessemer, Paul Héroult and Charles Hall, Carl von Linde and William Hampson, George E Davis, Fritz Haber & Carl Bosch, Kenneth Bingham Quinan, Leo Hendrik Baekeland, Arthur D Littlle, Thomas Midgley, Waldo Semon, Dermot Manning, Donald Campbell, Dudley Maurice Newitt, Magnus von Braun, Jasper Kane and John McKeen, Vladimir Haensel, Andrew Grove (Intel), Francis Bacon, Trevor Kletz, Victor Mills, Lewis Urry, Csaba Horvath, Tomio Wada, Jay Bailey, Spencer Silver and Arthur Fry, Jack Welch (General Electric), Roberto Goizueta (Coca Cola), Yoshio Nishi (Sony), Nathaniel Wyeth, Robert Langer, Xi Jinping President of People’s Republic of China.

There was a thunderous round of applause when it was pointed out that 11 July 2019 is UN World Population day and that Chemical Engineers who Changed the world included George Rosenkranz and colleagues who synthesized progesterone, later used in the contraceptive pill, which in turn has given women greater freedom to choose when they have children.

When it was highlighted that eight chemical engineers Linus Pauling, Fritz Haber, Carl Bosch, Mario Molina, Gialio Natta, Lars Onsager, Martin Lewis Perl and Frances Hamilton Arnold are also Nobel laureates, the face of every chemical engineering sophomore beamed with pride. Students were made aware of noteworthy features of the Chemical engineering curriculum at Banasthali which included the semester long Internship in the final year, subjects such as Object Oriented Programming, Data Structures and Entrepreneurship which are an integral component of the academic curriculum and a host of electives which included Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, Robotics & Automation etc.

The orientation also included based on market capitalization top 10 Chemical companies and oil companies in India as well as world at large. The growth potential of the chemical industry in India including the salient features of Specialty Chemicals industry along with CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) was shared with the students apart from a video on history of Chemical Engineering.

The highlight of the orientation was when two Proud to be Banasthalites Ms Medhavi Uniyal from New York USA and Ms Priyanka Bisht from Bangalore who were alumni from the very first of Chemical Engineering 2008 – 2012 addressed the students and shared their fond memories of Alma mater and their career achievements.

This was followed by introduction of faculty members of Chemical Engineering department and there was a loud cheer when the students found that that 50% of the 12 Chemical Engineering faculty at Banasthali were alumni of various IITs - Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee, Dhanbad Guwahati and the rest from BITS Pilani and various NITs – Jalandhar, Rourkela and Jaipur. The haunting flute music in the glory of chemical engineering summary video had the audience truly mesmerized.

Prof BR Natarajan conducted a special session for sophomores on Soft Skills for success which focused on Empathy, Negotiation, Public Speaking, Relationship Building, Leadership and Time Management. He administered a test on Personality analysis to measure motivation, aptitude, and attitude and gave tips on improving them also.

Proud to be Banasthalites who attended the orientation left with beaming faces and pride that they were indeed part of an institution which is a shining jewel in the crown among the institutions not only in India today but across the globe.
