The Anschütz Standard 22 Gyro Compass is the most popular gyro of all times

The Anschütz Standard 22 Gyro Compass is the most popular gyro of all times

The German navigation system supplier Raytheon Anschütz has delivered its 10,000th Standard 22 Gyro Compass, making the Standard 22 the world’s most popular gyro compass of all times. As the company announces during an official hand-over ceremony at Nor-Shipping 2011, the jubilee compass has been installed on board of the innovative Platform Supply Vessel “REM MIST” at Ulstein Verft.

Raytheon Anschütz has installed the jubilee compass as part of their proven navigation package, consisting of a triple Standard 22 gyro compass system, magnetic compass, various repeater compasses as well as adaptive autopilot system. The heading information provided by the gyro system is compliant with the demanding classification rules for navigation and dynamic positioning, such as DNV NAUT.OSV (A) DYNPOS AUTR. Jörn Fischbach, Sales Manager for Norway at Raytheon Anschütz, states: “By combining highest levels of reliability and accuracy with long gyrosphere lifetime, the Standard 22 Gyro Compass has become a standard solution for the demanding Norwegian offshore industry.”

Unique features of the Standard 22 Gyro Compass are the patented non-contact transmission of the gyro supply voltage and the optical signal transmission of the sensor data. Advanced functions of the Standard 22 include heading monitoring, automatic switch over, an independent transmitting magnetic compass (TMC) path as well as an individual speed error correction mode in addition to manual / automatic correction modes. Furthermore, specialized universal course transducers are available for cost-efficient gyro compass refit solutions that make possible to maintain existing heading receivers on board.

“We are proud that our jubilee compass is installed on a sophisticated, future-orientated vessel like REM MIST. We look back on years of trustful cooperation with Ulstein shipyard and also on a remarkable record of Standard 22 installations for Norwegian shipping companies. Our Norwegian distributor Syberg AS offers excellent support with their experienced knowledge in offshore navigation for our entire product portfolio like gyro compasses, steering control systems and fully integrated bridge systems”, Jörn Fischbach explains.

REM MIST will enter the fleet of Remøy Shipping AS in May 2011 and starts charter operation for Statoil. The 88.8 meters long vessel of Ulstein PX105 design is intended to serve general demands of the offshore industry. It is equipped with multiple cargo tanks for liquid and dry cargo. Featuring the Ulstein X-Bow® hull form, combined with diesel electric propulsion system, the vessel is also said to ensure the best performances with regards to fuel consumption, sea keeping, station keeping and speed. The vessel is built according to the DNV NAUT-OSV (A) notation, and its environmental friendliness is certified in compliance with latest Clean Design rules.

With the official hand-over ceremony of the 10,000th Standard 22 Gyro Compass to Ulstein Verft and Remøy Shipping at Nor-Shipping, the special connection between Standard 22 and the Norwegian offshore shipping and shipbuilding industry is continued. The very first gyro compass of type Standard 22 was installed on board of Bourbon’s Platform Supply Vessel “Bourbon Jade” at Aker Langsten shipyard in Tomrefjord. Only five years later Raytheon Anschütz handed over the 5,000th compass to Maersk Supply Service for their AHTS newbuild “Maersk Topper” at Aker Brattvåg shipyard.
