JMA Pilani Celebrates World Environment Day with Theme Beat Air Pollution

The United Nations, aware that the protection and improvement of the human environment is a major issue, which affects the well-being of peoples and economic development throughout the world, designated 5 June as World Environment Day. The celebration of this day provides each and everyone with an opportunity to broaden the basis for an enlightened opinion and responsible conduct by individuals, enterprises and communities in preserving and enhancing the environment. Since it began in 1974, it has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in more than 100 countries.

Each World Environment Day is organized around a theme that focuses attention on a particularly pressing environmental concern. The theme for 2019, “Beat Air Pollution,” is a call to action call to combat this global crisis. The main causes of air pollution due to human activities include household, industry, transport, agriculture, open burning of waste etc. Not all air pollution comes from human activity. Volcanic eruptions, dust storms and other natural processes also cause problems.

On 05 June 2019, JMA Pilani Principal Mrs Booma Natarajan addressed a group of school employees and students and shared thoughts on the importance of the day. She also made it clear to the gathering that the only way to beat pollution is to plant more saplings and jokingly said that putting up a selfie with sapling once a year is not enough. The team planted saplings and took a solemn vow to dream green, think green and act green round the year.

When the celebrations ended, the team members who participated in tree plantation left with beaming faces and pride that they were indeed part of an institution which is a shining jewel in the crown among the schools at Pilani.
