Press release from: AIGA Dallas Fort Worth

On Saturday, April 16th, AIGA Dallas Fort Worth successfully completed it’s first-ever Design Week, topping it off with the final event, the AIGA Fellow Award for 2011. AIGA DFW’s President, Jimmy Ball, emceed the event that recognized Dallas graphic designers Douglas May and Don Sibley with individual 2011 Fellow Awards, making them the second and third recipients in the chapter’s history. The first recipient was Jack Summerford, who received the honor in 2004. The significance of the award is emphasized by the fact that there are less than 175 AIGA Fellows nationwide.

The AIGA Fellow Award Program recognizes mature designers who have made a significant contribution toward raising the standards of excellence within their local and regional design community. After a short congratulatory video by advertising legend and AIGA Gold Medal winner, Stan Richards, Doug was introduced by world-renowned publication designer, Roger Black. Don Sibley was then introduced by Jesse Williamson, of Williamson Printing, one of the most respected printing companies in the world. The awards were presented in front of a gathering of over 70 professional colleagues, students, and family.

Douglas May has been an AIGA member for over 25 years and has served on the Dallas Chapter’s executive board and in volunteer and advisory roles. Doug’s design work has been honored in award shows and publications around the globe, and his firm May & Co. has worked with clients such as Neiman Marcus, The Washington Opera, Texas Instruments, Ryan & Company and many others.

Don Sibley has also been involved with the AIGA for many years, and his company, Sibley/Peteet, founded with Rex Peteet, celebrated 29 years in business the same week. Don’s work has also received accolades year after year for clients like Corona, The Image Bank, XTO Energy and Milton Bradley, to name a few. Don is also one of only two local designers to receive an AIGA Fellow Award and the prestigious DSVC Golden Egg.

“Often visual designers work under the radar, almost anonymously. You don’t see the credits roll after their work.” said Jimmy Ball, President of the AIGA Dallas Fort Worth chapter, “The AIGA Fellow Award is a way of identifying the best and brightest in our business and recognizing all they have contributed to our community. Doug and Don have worked extremely hard and achieved success all while giving back to the profession. They equally deserve this very high honor.”

AIGA, the professional association for design, is the premier place for design—to discover it, discuss it, understand it, appreciate it, be inspired by it. It is the place designers turn to first to exchange ideas and information, participate in critical analysis, and research and advance education and ethical practices. Founded in 1914, AIGA remains the oldest and largest professional membership organization for design. AIGA now represents more than 22,000 design professionals, educators and students through national activities and local programs developed by 66 chapters and 200 student groups.
