Diabetes Predicted For Half Of Americans By 2020
Study investigators say diabetes and pre-diabetes will also account for an estimated 10 percent of total health care spending by the end of the decade at an annual cost of almost $500 billion. That's up from an estimated $194 billion in 2010.
Local fitness pro Chris Gray says “the cheapest most efficient and quickest way to significantly lower this pending epidemic is education on proper exercise and good nutrition on a massive level covering the complete spectrum from young to old.”
With that said the case could be made that an answer to our nationwide diabetes problem is, in fact, exercise, but not just any exercise...muscle building exercise. The more muscle we have the better regulated our blood glucose levels are and the less chance we have for diabetes.
The combination of cardiovascular training and resistance weight training, done together, gives you a better bang for your buck, keeps your workout times to a minimum, and shows the greatest improvement in blood glucose control.
The guidelines I recommend are for people to get at least 150 minutes of walking or 75 minutes of running a week, along with three or more days a week of resistance training.
A recent study shows us that people who did aerobic training only or resistance training only, lowered their blood glucose levels moderately while those who did aerobic and resistance training together in combination showed significantly greater drops in blood glucose levels.
The kind of resistance training people did in this latest study isn't something you can accomplish at home with a few sets of dumbbells. (The study participants did their exercises under a trainer's supervision at a gym.)
Having a coach will give the foundation needed to succeed, a structured plan of action that you can follow, and the motivational support required for success.
Get the most out of your training efforts by completing aerobic training and resistance weight training together with a coach who will guide you through all of the bad information out there today.
