Inauguration of National Symposium cum Workshop on Biomolecular Recognition and Dynamics at Banasthali

The importance of the topic is best understood by Richard Feynman quote “if we were to name the most powerful assumption of all, which leads one on and on in an attempt to understand life, it is that all things are made of atoms, and that everything that living things do can be understood in terms of the jigglings and wigglings of atoms.”

Molecular recognition is of paramount importance in biology—without it life would not exist. Biological macro molecules by and large require significant dynamical freedom to carry out their different functions such as signal transduction, metabolism, catalysis and gene regulation. Effectors which include ligands, DNA and external milieu are considered to function in a purely dynamical manner by selectively stabilizing a specific dynamical state, thereby regulating biological function. In particular, proteins in presence of these effectors can exist in several dynamical states with distinct binding or enzymatic activity.

Protein dynamics are now widely accepted as universally occurring in all kingdoms of life. Importantly, dynamics play the crucial role to allow kinases and other modifying enzymes to access their targets. Further the dynamics of proteins, which are essential for both folding and function, are known to be strongly dependent on solvent viscosity and friction. The mobility/dynamics of water allows a protein to interact with other molecules, enables proton transfer and facilitates a large number of biochemical processes

Molecular Dynamics (MD) has provided significant insight into the details of molecular motion, but the significant contributions from experimental techniques cannot be overlooked. Indeed experiments provide direct evidence for dynamic processes, often at an atomic level, and can be used to validate the predictions of MD. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a particularly powerful tool in the experimental analysis of macromolecular dynamics, because it furnishes information about both structure and motion at atomic resolution.

Considering the above, a national symposium cum workshop on Biomolecular Recognition and Dynamics has been organized by Centre for Bioinformatics Department of Bioscience and Biotechnology Banasthali Vidyapith during 11 – 13 Jan 2019 sponsored by Bioinformatics Division Department of Biotechnology Government of India and supported by Schrodinger.

On11 Jan 2019, in the lecture theatre of Jeev Mandir Banasthali, the proceedings had an auspicious start with Saraswati Vandana and lamp lighting by dignitaries who included from Banasthali Prof Dipjyoti Chakraborty Dean of Research, Prof Jaya Dwivedi Dean School of Life Sciences, Prof Sarvesh Paliwal Dean Instructions, Prof Dharam Kishore Officiating Secretary and from School of Computational and Integrative Sciences, JNU Delhi Prof Pradipta Bandyopadhyay.

Prof Bandyopadhyay in his thought provoking key note address quoted Paul Dirac “It therefore becomes desirable that approximate practical methods of applying quantum mechanics should be developed, which can lead to an explanation of the main features of complex atomic systems without too much computation” and highlighted protein functions, molecular biophysics, molecular motors (kinesin) and computer simulations for protein study.

Subsequent sessions have talk by Dr S Asthana THSTI Faridabad, Dr Bipin Singh BMLMU Gurugram, Dr R Raghu Schrodinger Bangalore, Prof B Jayaram IIT Delhi, Prof Sarvesh Paliwal Banasthali, Dr J Reddy LVPEI Hyderabad, Dr Pramod Katara UoA, Prayagraj, Dr Kishor Shende BU Bhopal, Dr H Fiumera BU SUNY USA and several hands on sessions spread over three days.

The proceedings of this symposium cum workshop are bound to evolve holistic thinking on Bio molecular Recognition and Dynamics and set pace for new frontiers in its applications.
