The RES Champions League is a competition supported by organisations in seven European countries with partial funding from the European Union. The countries are Bulgaria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy and Poland. The pre-existing national leagues in the Czech Republic, France and Germany were the models for this European Champions League.
The municipality of Prato allo Stelvio from South Tyrol is the overall winner of this season because it even exports both renewable energy and heat. Prato allo Stelvio’s win should encourage other participating countries and their citizens to make strides to catch up.
Leading cities and towns of each participating country compete against each other. A continuously updated ranking chart on the website of the RES Champions League (http://www.res-league.eu) still shows the dominance of German cities and municipalities. The ranking is determined after the number of solar systems installed per inhabitant. However, the ranking score is not the only criteria taken into account when appointing the winners of the RES Champions League. Statements made by local authorities about renewable energies and energy efficiency of each city are considered. A jury of representatives from each of the seven countries determined the winners.
“One winner always is certain in this local commitment: the world climate,” said the project leader of the RES Champions League, Yannick Régnier. “The RES Champions League provides an opportunity to sensitise cities and municipalities about renewable energies in a sporty way. The large number of participants indicates this project’s success.”

The RES Champions League is a network of national RES leagues, which aims at creating a positive renewable energy competition between European cities, towns and villages. National leagues have already been established in Bulgaria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary and Poland. The local authorities in these countries compete in the fields of solar (photovoltaic and thermal) and wood energy.
The European RES Champions League was launched during the joint Annual Conference of Climate Alliance and Energie-Cités in April 2009. The first European awarding ceremony took place in May 2010 in Dunkerque.
