Handover of “Green Footprints” to UNFCCC Executive Secretary at COP17
Date and location:Wednesday, 30 November, 9:30
Outside entrance by flags
On Wednesday, 30 November, Climate Alliance will hand over “Green Footprints” collected by 200,000 children in 25 countries to UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christina Figueres in Durban.
“ZOOM – Kids on the Move for Climate Action” is Climate Alliance’s annual campaign on sustainable mobility for children aged 4 to 10 years old, which aims to show that the ‘little ones’ can take steps to help protect the climate too and not just talk about climate protection like the ‘big ones’ at the UN Climate Summit.
In 2011 – ZOOM’s tenth anniversary – new records are set: 200,000 ZOOM kids from 16 European and 9 other countries (Austria, Belgium, Cocos Keeling Islands, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Italy, La Reunion, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Mauritius, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, Tanzania, Thailand and Ukraine) joined forces to collect “Green Footprints” as their contribution to save the world’s climate. The children were extremely motivated and collected way over 2.5 million “Green Footprints” by using sustainable means of transport for their daily journeys.
On Wednesday Thomas Brose, Executive Director of Climate Alliance, shall hand over the Green Footprints to UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christina Figueres on behalf of all participants. He will be assisted by representatives of ZOOM participants from Austria, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands as well as the Swiss circumnavigator Dario Schwörer from TOPtoTOP.
Climate Alliance promised the children an opportunity to present their concerns about the global climate to participants at the Climate Change Summit. These children, the adults of tomorrow, do not want to suffer the consequences of climate change and are ready to ZOOM on and make things better than they have been for their parents and grandparents.
