Celebrations Galore at Banasthali – Janmasthami 2018

Appreciated by the world at large, Banasthali firmly believes that to be top ranking, it is the foremost responsibility of any Indian educational institution to nurture humans with the tolerant and harmonious view of life as envisaged in the Indian culture the spirit of which has been beautifully captured in the Indian Constitution by the founding fathers of the nation.

The Panchmukhi Shiksha – the fivefold education evolved over decades at Banasthali attempts a balance of the five aspects of education, namely Physical, Practical, Aesthetic, Moral and Intellectual and aims at all round harmonious development of personality. The mission and vision of Banasthali includes synthesis of spiritual values and scientific achievements of the East and the West.

To reinforce the fivefold education, Banasthali has established a rich tradition of celebrating various days of national and international significance throughout the year. Shaheed Diwas, Independence day, Gandhi Jayanti and Republic day celebrations aim to instill a feeling of patriotism and nationalism so that nation above all always stays on top of all Banasthalites. With students coming from different parts of India, the 850 acre Banasthali campus itself is a mini India echoing the lines of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore in National anthem “Panjaba-Sindhu-Gujarata-Maratha Dravida-Utkala-Banga.”

The rich ethnic diversity of India truly comes alive when the campus celebrates Hariyali Teej, Janmasthami, Ganesh Chaturthi, Navratra Dandiya & Garba, Durgasthami, Dusshera, Diwali, Guru Nanak Jayanti, Eid al Fitr, Christmas, Lohri, Basant Panchami and Holi. During these celebrations, the students and faculty of Banasthali add a spectrum of colours and gaiety to campus life and indeed rise above caste and creed and develop mutual respect for all religions.

Janmashtami also called Gokulashtami which marks the birth of Krishna an avtar of Lord Vishnu usually falls in the month of Aug – Sep every year and is calculated by the traditional Hindu lunar calendar as the eighth day of the dark fortnight in the month of Shravan. Krishna not only inspired many followers during his lifetime but also beyond it. By the 1980s, even before the internet arrived in full force, there were around 3000 translations of the Bhagavad Gita (which has 18 chapters with 700 verses -- 574 by Krishna, 84 by Arjuna, 41 by Sanjaya, and 1 by Dhritarashtra) in almost 50 languages.

On 3 Sep 2018 Janmasthami day, Banasthalites definitely gave dahi- handi a miss, only to replace that tradition with the aesthetically appealing and visually mesmerizing decorated tableaus popularly referred as ‘Jhankis’. Students dressed up in beautiful attires and gave a glimpse of Krishna's eventful life which began with his birth in a jail to the phase where he took upon the most prestigious role of his life of being a mentor, a guide to a confused Arjun.

To quote Ms Anuska Singh third year BTech Chemical Engineering student, Jhankis were undoubtedly the USP of the janamashtmi celebration in banasthali. Radio Banasthali which is the first community radio station of Rajasthan also aired special programs on the occasion of janamashtmi. Many students observed fast on the occasion and hostels as is customary served delightful delicacies on the occasion.
