International Youth Day Celebrations at Banasthali
Undoubtedly, youth are a transformative force peaking with enthusiasm, creativity and resourcefulness. There are currently 1.8 billion young people between the ages of 10 and 24 in the world. This is the largest youth population ever. But 1 in 10 of the world’s children live in conflict zones and 24 million of them are out of school.12 August was first designated International Youth Day by the UN General Assembly in 1999, and from 2000 onwards has been serving as an annual celebration of the role of young women and men as essential partners in change, and an opportunity to raise awareness of challenges and problems facing the world’s youth.
Political instability, labour market challenges and limited space for political and civic participation have led to increasing isolation of youth in societies and the theme chosen for 2018 is “Safe Spaces for Youth.” Youth need safe spaces where they can come together, engage in activities related to their diverse needs and interests, participate in decision making processes and freely express themselves. While there are many types of spaces, safe spaces ensure the dignity and safety of youth.
The power packed message from UN Secretary-General António Guterres to mark the day says “The hopes of the world rest on young people. Peace, economic dynamism, social justice, tolerance — all this and more, today and tomorrow, depends on tapping into the power of youth.”
Prof Natarajan welcomed the students and gave an overview of the significance of the day including the age range for defining youth in different countries and interesting details connecting youth icon Swami Vivekananda and Rajasthan. BTech Second year Chemical Engineering students Mansi Garg, Maitri Upadhyay, Archita Bajpai, Kanika Pandey, Himanshi Jadaun and Aditi Srivastava spoke to mark the occasion which included inspiring excerpts from Swami Vivekananda’s speech at World Parliament of Religions Chicago in 1893.
The youth of today to become dreamers performers and achievers in the global arena need to have a right mix of motivation, aptitude and attitude. The chemical engineering students took a psychometric test for personality analysis and the top scorers namely Shivani Mishra, Rishika Chawla, Aditi Srivastava and Akshita Mudgal were also felicitated.
To mark the occasion, the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication students of Banasthali to highlight the use of technology by youth made a video “ Youth Ki Awaaz: Be the Change you want to be.”
