Having suddenly passed away in May 2009 at the age of 46, David Payne was an artist who wasn't driven by thoughts of being exhibited; he worked for the sheer enjoyment of creating work. This exhibition, arranged by his family and friends, serves as a tribute in his memory as well as giving everyone a last chance to see his vast and unique collection.

Often perceived as having a dark sense of humour and menacing undertones, Payne’s works are elaborately formed reliefs that were started on board and then built up with papier-mâché, modelling clay, wire and string. Idiosyncratic in style and execution, Payne’s creations often times convey to the viewer unsettling feelings of ‘being lost or engulfed’.

Along side his relief paintings; Payne produced pen and ink illustrations for children's books and comic strips. In addition, he designed stunning computer art with the themes such as the Tarot. On a lighter and witter note, he also created small and large scale sculptures such as a cheeky Elvis being crucified on the cross or a gun with legs, titled: "The Gunrunner". Payne was truly a man of many interests and ideas, as he also extended his talents to film and music making.

As part of this extensive collection Payne’s sketch books will be available to flick through, these contain a panoply of funny ideas, sketches of the women in his life, lyrics, and cartoon stories about how difficult it is to simply go to the shop and buy your ‘booze and fags’.
