Self-climbing technology and large slab tables minimise crane times

The Marina Bay Sands Hotel Towers offer a luxurious environment from top to bottom with a total of 2,600 rooms and suites – with breathtaking views.

May 2009, Marina Bay Sands, Singapore - The South-East Asian city-state of Singapore – an internationally renowned financial centre and, with its very busy port, one of the largest and most modern freight handling centres in the world – is now also striving to become a top tourist destination. With its ambitious Marina Bay Sands™ project, the U.S.-based Las Vegas Sands Corporation, is currently developing a gigantic complex complete with convention facilities, casino, theatres, museum and an impressive hotel complex. The three concave-shaped hotel towers dominate the city skyline and each has 55 floors that will be connected using a sky terrace on the roof at a height of nearly 200 metres. An international team of PERI specialists from Singapore and Germany created a comprehensive formwork and scaffolding solution for the Korean building company, SsangYong Engineering & Construction. In particular, the SKYTABLE large slab tables as well as PERI ACS self-climbing technology have optimised construction progress with reduced crane times.

In each case, two asymmetrically curved legs have been positioned against each other which grow together like bridge pylons to form units. Although the three hotel towers are still identical with regard to the height and number of floors, the forms of the respective building elements nevertheless have considerable differences in terms of the base width, curvature radius and lateral offset dimension. Furthermore, the individual floors are also offset from one another in a longitudinal direction.

From the broadest product range for system equipment available worldwide, PERI provides the optimal solution in each case for a wide spectrum of requirements. Here, the variable VARIO GT 24 girder wall formwork and the column formwork – which is based on the same components – form a proven and stable basis. In addition, versatile shoring with ST 100 stacking towers are quickly and easily installed using only a minimum of system parts.

Only four days for a complete floor
Only two cranes per tower are available to the construction crews. Thus, PERI engineers created crane-independent and crane-saving formwork solutions for the core walls and floor slabs respectively. With the help of ACS self-climbing technology and the large-area SKYTABLE slab tables, crews can finish a complete floor with a standard height of three metres in only four days. In order to be able to achieve this, the elevator shafts are climbed three cycles in advance. For the 25-centimetre reinforced concrete slabs, a total of 110 SKYTABLE slab tables are required for constructing two complete floors in each case.

Large slab tables – quickly and safely moved
With SKYTABLE large-area slab tables, which are up to 20 metres long and five metres wide, close to 100 square metres of slab formwork are quickly and safely moved with only one crane lift. By means of a lifting mechanism – specially developed for this system – and the chain guidance shoe for transferring the force at the slab edge, the table can be pulled horizontally from the building and then lifted immediately to the next shuttering position. During the moving procedure, the operating personnel are always positioned in a safe and secure place on the slab edge and do not have not to stand on the table.

In spite of the huge table sizes, the SKYTABLE system is extremely flexible. Using PERI MULTIPROP aluminum slab props, a large lowering height is achieved – with slab offsets of up to 20 centimetres and, at the same time, 50-centimetre parapet wall heights, this is an enormous advantage. In addition, the MULTIPROP props can be connected by means of MRK frames in order to form towers. Thus, SKYTABLE tables can be flexibly used for the intermediate storey heights of almost nine metres as well. From the outset, PERI engineers took into consideration the continuously changing geometry with their solution and used an unchanged SKYTABLE framework construction for the entire height of the building. This has meant that any table modifications required have been kept to an absolute minimum, and time-consuming, costly conversion work which could lead to misapplications have been avoided as far as possible. Something that which is virtually a matter of course for PERI engineering are the integrated chain ducts – due to the box-outs for the various slab offsets – which ensure safe and fast connections to the crane

Climbing without a crane
The PERI ACS self-climbing system is the optimal formwork scaffolding for the altogether twelve elevator shafts constructed in advance. With the help of ACS (Automatic Climbing System), the different-sized shafts with dimensions ranging between 2.30 and 10.10 meters can be shuttered, struck and climbed in four-day cycles without the need of a crane. Altogether, five safe and secure working levels climb at the same time to the next section: two platforms for forming, reinforcement work and concreting the shaft walls as well as three finishing platforms for pre-tensioning the subsequent storey slabs. In combination with CB climbing scaffold and the VARIO GT 24 girder wall formwork, PERI ACS has thus optimised the operational sequences on the construction site.

Comprehensive range of services
However, in order to ensure the successful completion of a construction project, there is more involved than just providing the optimal formwork and scaffolding system. Therefore, for each project, PERI engineers develop individual solutions for an efficient sequence of operations. In addition, continuous support throughout the project is a matter of course for PERI. With large-scale projects like this, specially trained service engineers from PERI are permanently available to provide help and advice to site personnel. In this way, it can be guaranteed that the PERI systems are used correctly and efficiently. Furthermore, a technical and logistical support service helps to master all tasks not only before but also during the construction period.
