Press release from: Schaltbau GmbH

Munich, 1.10.2008: The new DN series from Schaltbau GmbH is a low-priced technological alternative to traditional push-pull connectors. It makes sure that connections remain undisturbed matter how harsh the conditions. The bayonet locking system and the patented, self-cleaning spring contact system ensure a long working life and excellent resistance to shock and vibration. The connector is available in a metal and a plastic version. For further information, see www.schaltbau-gmbh.com.

Schaltbau connectors are designed for use in difficult conditions, especially where human lives and valuable property depends on reliable technology. Possible areas of use for the DN family are mechanical engineering, traffic technology, measurement and control technology through to telecommunications. With their robust design, they can resist all sorts of different influences: their IP68 protection category guarantees, for the DN connectors, complete protection against dust and against the consequences of long-term immersion in water, whether plugged or unplugged. The DN model series can be used at temperatures from -55°C to +85°C. It complies with the requirements of standard IEC 60512.

Mechanical properties

The DN family is available in two model series; the tough metal housing is made from nickel-plated die-cast zinc, and the plastic housing is made from durable plastic. The DN connector is structured on a modular basis, which means that housings are available for heat-shrinking mouldings, cable sleeves and braided screen connections. The bayonet fitting ensures fast, safe connections. Coding is via the bayonet path in the housing. The mechanical working life of the metal variant is 8,000 insert cycles, and that of the plastic version is around 1,000. Both versions are available in each case with a different number of poles.

Electrical properties

The connectors are fitted with Schaltbau's patented, self-cleaning spring contact system, and the spring contacts with self-cleaning end surfaces are gilded. This gives a high level of resistance to shocks and vibrations. In addition, it ensures a low volume resistance for consistently high contact reliability even with low voltages and currents. The variable structure of the DN Metal series also allows the use of screen attenuation and filter discs to prevent disturbance from external EMC factors.
