Tropical Cyclone Gael

Tropical Cyclone Gael

Evergreen, CO, February 4, 2009 – The Swinden Group, through their Severe Weather Advisories, is advising interests and travelers to Madagascar to prepare for the arrival of Tropical Cyclone Gael which could have devastating effects to the island nation.

Tropical Cyclone Gael, with sustained winds of 45 mph, is located in the southern Indian Ocean north of La Reunion and is tracking to the west towards northern Madagascar. Over the next 24 hours, Gael is expected to enter into an environment favorable for intensification. Gael is expected to strike Madagascar in the vicinity of Toamasina (Tamatave), which is the nation’s chief port, on February 6th with winds in excess of 90 mph. Once overland, the cyclone is expected to weaken while tracking towards Antananarivo. Interests in Madagascar should be preparing for the arrival of this storm.

“The main threat from Gael will be widespread flooding from the torrential rains, mudslides, and substantial damage to poorly constructed buildings,” explains Matthew Swinden, President of the Swinden Group. “Damage to the infrastructure, to include roads, communications, water, power, and sewage, can be expected.” Interest in this region should be prepared for widespread flooding, power outages and travel delays”
