Depeche View 1.3.8 Snapshot

Software project costs can be reduced by optimizing full text search within source code. Todays IDEs are not efficient on that. New freeware tool provides an optimized user interface and search engine.

STUTTGART, Germany. Vincent Stahl, computer artist and software developer, released Depeche View 1.3.8, a text search tool that can search thousands of text files in realtime. The new release provides improved usability, especially for novice users.

As it is today, software developers who need to analyze a program often tend to compile everything, then use a debugger, because the classical IDE text search is not efficient: it requires endless mouse clicks, open windows, close windows, maximize and minimize operations. Besides the cost of wasted time, developers are demotivated by many repetitive, robot-like point and click operations, and therefore try to reduce the number of searches.

In contrast, Depeche View loads all text files from a folder into memory, presenting all contents in one window. The user interface is reduced to the essential, requiring no pulldown menus or dialogue boxes. A word is searched just by typing it. Phrases are searched, bookmarked, or copied to clipboard by a mouse click.

There are no upfront preparations. Download Open Source projects from the web, then fly through the code - no IDE integration, no compile, compile errors, missing libraries or configuration efforts. Depeche View's Extended Edition can even view all source code from .zip or .jar files directly.

The tool requires no installation, and runs from any USB stick. Bookmark lists present remembered words in a clearly readable way. A configuration file allows to define own commands, e.g. to open files in an external editor.

Release 1.3.8 provides improved usability for novice users: point and click into the find mask is possible, common hotkeys like F3 for "next search result" are supported, and functions like "create window" or "next result" are now also available through buttons.

Depeche View is intended not only for software developers, but anyone who needs to search much ASCII text, like CSV exports from spreadsheets, logfiles of a webserver, or html documentation files.

Depeche View Base is freeware, available for download under

Depeche View Extended Edition is commercial, providing additional features like direct loading of Zip file contents, redefinition of further hotkeys, and additional scripting capabilities.
