Development in large, intransparent software projects, often called Brownfields, requires many text searches for analysis. New search tool provides a GUI optimized for that.

STUTTGART, Germany. Depeche View is a text search tool with a new GUI concept, optimized for research of existing code. It displays thousands of text files in a single window, just as if they were one large text. This way, switching between files is no longer necessary, making the search and analysis of huge software projects easy and fast.

Depeche View achieves speed through reduction. No dialogues must be filled in. Words are searched by typing, or by clicking on them. Reading a hundred text files no longer means to cycle through a hundred tabs; everything is in a single view.

"This tool reflects software development experience" says Vincent Stahl, the author. "Eighty percent of development is search, copy and modify of existing source code. Existing technology is integrated into existing projects. This means a massive amount of full text searches every day." Since version 1.42, copy and modify can also be done directly within the tool's integrated text editor.

An efficient working process uses two windows side by side. The developer compares two parts of text, tracks dependencies by ping-pong walk throughs, and finally copies and modifies text from one window into the other. With Depeche View, two windows side by side are created with a single click. Searches from one window into the other are also a single click. And as all text files are present in one view, there is no need to keep more than two windows open.

To analyze external Open Source packages, Depeche View needs no upfront preparations. Zip file contents can be loaded and searched directly.

The tool itself requires no installation, and runs from any USB stick. Bookmark lists present remembered words in a clearly readable way. A configuration file allows to define own commands, like predefined search queries.

Depeche View is intended not only for software developers, but anyone who needs to search much ASCII text, like CSV exports from spreadsheets, logfiles of a webserver, or html documentation files.

Depeche View Base is freeware, available for download under

The commercial Extended Edition can load and edit any number of text files, supports user defined scripts on hot keys, clipboard automation and zip file content loading. The free Base Edition also provides a Demo Mode, allowing to try those features.
