Arrivals and Departures: How Vienna Meets the World

VIENNA, 29 June 2017– As the summer holidays approach, METROPOLE- Vienna in English is talking about all things travel. How Vienna meets the world is a two way street, with residents going out to explore the world, and the visitors coming in to discover Vienna.

The cover story (p 20) “ Wanderlust: Inside the Austrian’s Love for Adventure” explores Austrian’s obsession with the wild, climbing, exploring, and discovering the world. Author Kimberly Bradley explores the drive of these land-locked residents to travel, such as wandering artist Michael Höpfner and Jakob Horvat, journalist and creator of the blog Thousand First Steps.

METROPOLE Announces
Winner of Austria’s first English-language
Journalism Competition

This spring, high school students at the American International School Vienna took part in METROPOLE ‘s first Journalism Championship. Three budding writers competed in a poll to have their article published, and Yakob Reed’s article “Take this Waltz – and Don’t Forget to Flush” (p 48) was selected as the winner.

In this issue you will find:

“The Post-Partisan Politics of Sebastian Kurz” p 13, Special Report, Paweł Marczewski
Marczewski examines the political maneuvers of Sebastian Kurz, the 30-year-old Austrian foreign minister, who has created short-term success, but at the cost of forfeiting former values to peel away voters from the far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ).

“There’s No Place Like Home” p 42, City Life, Andreas Rainer
“How beautiful Vienna would be without all those Viennese,” quipped Georg Kreisler. Vienna powers down during the summer as most people go off on holiday. But the best vacation spots may be within the city limits, and appreciative tourists and clever locals come out to play.

“Crossing the Pond” p 72, On The Vine: Weingut Pfaffl, Catherine Hooker
As the first Austrian winery to win the “European Winery of the Year” from the U.S. magazine Wine Enthusiast, winery R&A Pfaffl has helped to establish Austria’s signature Grüner Veltliner as a part of the resurgence of Austrian wine on the international market.

“Sand and Deliver” p 81, Sports, World Beach Volleyball Championships, Sam Jackson
This summer, the World Beach Volleyball Championships descend on Vienna, a young sport eager to up their exposure, and make this competition a landmark event in the city.

Quotes from the issue:
“The key words I was dealing with in my ORF work – refugees, crisis – made me think the world was bad and dangerous. I wanted to do something that would show the opposite,” Jakob Horvat, Journalist, Blogger and creator of Thousand First Steps p 22, Cover Story, Wanderlust: Inside the Austrian’s Love for Adventure

“The Viennese escape the city for a Sommerfrische (vacation) in the Waldviertel or Salzkammergut. Or perhaps they disappear to some sun bleached Italian or Croatian beach, desperate for a spot to spread their towel without encroaching on the family from Simmering lying next to them. While all the while, their genial, leafy hometown is enjoyed to the fullest by appreciative tourists and the few locals who are smart enough to realize that summer is by far the best time of the year to be in Vienna.” Andreas Rainer, Author p43, City Life, There’s No Place Like Home

“Vienna has the ideal conditions to make this [Beach Volleyball World Championship] the best in its history.”
Ary S. Graça, President of the Federation for International Volleyball, p 81, Sports, Sand and Deliver
